Key Points

  • Adobeā€™s Firefly AI video model is now in public beta .

  • Firefly now has a subscription service with Standard and Pro plans, plus a Premium tier on the way.

šŸ‘ØšŸ»ā€šŸ’»News ā€“ Adobe is doubling down on its Firefly AI models with a new standalone subscription service, offering users access to AI-powered image, vector, and video generation.

āœØWhat's more? The company has also launched a revamped website, firefly.adobe.com, where users can try out its AI models.

A key highlight is the new Firefly AI video model, now in public beta on the Firefly website and Premiere Pro Beta app. This new video model generates short AI videos from text or images, with customization options for camera angles, movement, and aspect ratio.

For now, the Firefly subscription service includes a Standard and Pro plan, allowing users to generate AI images, vectors, and videos while integrating with Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop. A Premium tier is in the works, though pricing hasnā€™t been announced.

šŸ§How does it compare? Adobeā€™s Firefly is stepping into a competitive space alongside OpenAIā€™s Sora, Runwayā€™s Gen-3 Alpha, and Google DeepMindā€™s Veo. What sets Firefly apart is Adobeā€™s emphasis on legally licensed training data, ensuring its AI models are free from brand logos and NSFW contentā€”something the company says makes it a more reliable choice for professionals.

Key Points

  • The decision challenges key fair use arguments AI companies rely on, raising concerns for the generative AI industry.

  • With more AI copyright lawsuits underway, this ruling could shape future legal battles over AI and intellectual property.

ā˜•News ā€“ Thomson Reuters has won a landmark AI copyright case in the US, marking a significant legal victory in the growing debate over AI and intellectual property.

šŸ“–For context ā€“ The dispute began in 2020 when Thomson Reuters sued legal AI startup Ross Intelligence, accusing it of copying materials from its legal research platform, Westlaw. This week, a judge sided with Thomson Reuters, ruling that Ross Intelligence had indeed infringed on its copyright.

ā€œNone of Rossā€™s possible defenses holds water. I reject them all,ā€ wrote U.S. District Judge Stephanos Bibas in his decision.

šŸ‘Øā€āš–ļøWhy this matters ā€“ As AI companies race to build advanced models, legal battles over how they use copyrighted material are becoming more frequent. Many AI systems have been trained on books, films, artwork, and websites, leading to lawsuits not just in the US but also in China, Canada, the UK, and beyond.

This ruling could set a major precedent for the ongoing clash between AI developers and rights holders. Cornell professor James Grimmelmann remarked: ā€œIf this decision is followed elsewhere, itā€™s really bad for the generative AI companies.ā€ He also noted that the judgeā€™s reasoning challenges key fair use arguments that AI companies have relied on.
