Australian government launches AI month to encourage responsible, safe technology use
😁News - The Australian government launched the country's first AI Month on 15 November, to promote the safe and responsible use of the technology.
The Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic, kicked off AI Month by opening a new AI exhibition at Questacon, Australia's National Science and Technology Center in Canberra.
🤓What's more? The initiative which will run from 15 November to 15 December has been organized by the National AI Centre (NAIC) within the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It aims to unite experts, researchers, organizations, and entrepreneurs to discuss Australia's strategy for the future of AI.
Data61, the digital arm of CSIRO, has also partnered with five universities, including the Australian National University, for the Tech4HSE program. The 18 million AUD program will focus on enhancing workplace safety through digital technologies, by bringing together top researchers in areas like generative and immersive AI.
Furthermore, over 50 events, hosted by 40 different organizations, are set to take place across Australia throughout the AI Month. These include workshops, panel discussions, conferences, and hackathons, all aimed at showcasing AI opportunities and best practices.
Youtube cracks down on AI misuse with new rules requiring content disclosures
🎥News - On 14 November, YouTube announced new guidelines for AI-generated content, including requirements for creators to disclose the use of generative AI when uploading realistic videos.
The new rules, set to be implemented in the coming months, aim to tackle concerns surrounding the misuse of AI technology for promoting scams and spreading misinformation.
🤔To what extent will these changes help though?
Al-generated videos, especially those covering sensitive topics, will be marked with prominent labels on the YouTube video player to alert viewers.
Creators that repeatedly fail to disclose AI-generated content may have their videos removed from YouTube or be suspended from the platform's revenue-sharing program.
YouTube will update its privacy complaint process to let users request the removal of AI-generated videos mimicking a person, including their face or voice.
Additionally, YouTube music partners, such as record labels and distributors, will be able to ask to remove AI-generated music that imitates an artist's unique singing or rapping voice.
However, it is important to note that not all requests for content removal will be accepted. According to the video platform, factors such as the content being a parody or satire and featuring public officials or individuals may influence the decision.
Singapore to take a cautious approach in promoting AI adoption, MAS official says
🏦News - In a recent interview, Sopnendu Mohanty, the chief fintech officer of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, said that the island country is dedicated to promoting the responsible growth of AI technology. Mohanty emphasized that valuable insights from the challenges faced in the digital-asset sector will shape their approach.
Building on this, the central bank official added that the city-state is looking to play the long game, opting for a slow pace in AI adoption. This cautious strategy contrasts with the rushed adoption of digital currencies, which resulted in the rapid emergence of bad actors.
🧐But what is Singapore's President's take on AI? Speaking at the Singapore Fintech Festival 2023 on 15 November, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam remarked that he sees a quicker impact of AI technology on the financial services sector compared to other industries.
Tharman acknowledged the benefits of AI, noting that it can be a valuable tool for speeding up financial analysis and providing personalized advice, but he highlighted that the importance of human judgment and ethical guidelines, especially in this regard, are irreplaceable.
On a side note, Singapore's "double-digit billion dollar" AI investments this year have resulted in the creation of thousands of related job vacancies. This could mark the beginning of a more widespread AI adoption in Singapore.
