😥Will AI Break the Chip Market?!
PLUS: Meta Connect 2024 Highlights
Reading time: 5 minutes
Key Points
Growing demand for AI computing power could strain semiconductor supply chains and lead to another chip shortage.
Cloud service providers are set to increase their capital spending by 36% in 2024, driven by AI and computing needs.
If GPU demand doubles by 2026, suppliers may need to ramp up production by 30% or more.
👨🏻💻News - A new report from Bain & Company warns that the increasing demand for AI computing power could seriously strain the supply chains for chips used in data centers, PCs, and smartphones. Combine that with ongoing geopolitical issues, and we might be headed for another semiconductor shortage.
The authors point out that while the chip shortage from the pandemic is behind us, companies are already gearing up for a potential new one driven by AI. They emphasized that the supply chain for semiconductors is extremely complex, and a demand spike of 20% or more could easily throw things off balance, causing yet another shortage.
📖Their findings revealed that -
Spending on data centers and the chips that power them isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In fact, major cloud service providers are set to increase their capital spending by 36% in 2024, largely because they’re putting more money into AI and faster computing.
If the demand for current-generation GPUs in data centers were to double by 2026—which seems likely based on current trends—suppliers of essential components would have to boost their production by 30% or more in certain cases.
Key Points
Meta AI now helps with photo editing and answers questions about shared images, thanks to its new multimodal capabilities.
Meta is testing translation tools with automatic dubbing and lip-syncing for Reels on Facebook and Instagram.
🚀News - At the Meta Connect 2024 conference, Meta announced some exciting updates for its AI.
Now, Meta AI can help you edit photos and even answer questions about the pictures you share. This is thanks to the new multimodal capabilities powered by the Llama 3.2 models. So, just like with Google Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT, you can now share photos in your chats along with text.
🤠Here's what you can expect -
When you share a photo, Meta AI can figure out what's in it and answer questions about it. For example, you could upload a picture of a cute puppy and ask the AI what breed it is. Or you might share an image of a fancy dessert and ask for the recipe.
To edit images using AI, all you have to do is send a photo to Meta AI and ask for the changes you want. You could request things like adding or removing objects in the foreground, changing your outfit, or updating the background, like adding a sunset behind you.
🤹🏻♂️What's more? On Instagram, when you share photos from your feed to your stories, Meta AI will take a look at the photo, figure it out, and then create a fitting background for your story.
Additionally, Meta is expanding its generative AI features and testing the sharing of AI-generated images on Facebook and Instagram to encourage more people to try it out.
Besides photo editing, Meta is testing translation tools for Facebook and Instagram Reels that feature automatic dubbing and lip-syncing. These tests will start with small groups in the U.S. and Latin America, focusing on both English and Spanish.
