Senate urges Pentagon to speed up development of AI-driven neural sensors for soldiers

🕵️‍♂️News - US Senators in both parties are urging the Pentagon to speed up the development and "accelerate funding" for the creation of AI-driven "wearable" neural sensors that could be used by armed forces.

🤵But what are these sensors in the first place? Well, the Senate Armed Services Committee is encouraging the development of dual-purpose wearable neural biosensor technologies.

These technologies would be able to collect and transmit data on a variety of biometric factors, including heart rate, blood pressure, brain activity, and more. This data could be used to assess the health and performance of warfighters in real-time.

🧛‍♀️Will the sensors be used by a single defense group?

  • A Senate report suggests that AI-driven sensors would be used to track biometric data for multiple defense groups, such as security forces, aviators, and unmanned system pilots.

  • Senators estimate that the sensors could eventually be used to track data for up to 500,000 warfighters.

'AI bots could replace us,' peer warns House of Lords during debate on AI

👩‍⚖️News - In a recent debate on the development of AI, Lord Richard Denison warned that the House of Lords could be replaced by bots with "deeper knowledge, higher productivity, and lower running costs".

Denison, an independent crossbencher, said that AI services may soon be able to deliver speeches in the style and voice of a human, "with no hesitation, repetition or deviation".

He cited this as an example of the potential impact of AI on the UK jobs market, which is already facing significant challenges due to automation.

🤴What were the key points Denison highlighted?

  • He said that AI could also have a significant impact on the media industry, as AI-generating companies are able to scrape for free information from news websites.

  • Finally, he called on the government to develop a plan to help workers who are displaced by AI and to invest in education and training so that people can develop the skills they need to succeed in the AI economy.

AI-generated text appears more human on social media than actual human text, study finds

👩‍🎨News - A recent study published in the scientific journal Science Advances found that AI-generated text can appear more human on social media than text written by actual humans.

👩‍🏫What was the study all about? Besides thorough research, the study involved a test where two sets of tweets were created: one set of tweets was written by humans and the other was generated by AI. The researchers then asked human participants to read the tweets and identify whether they were written by a human or AI.

The results of the study found that human participants were more likely to label AI-generated tweets as human-generated than tweets actually crafted by humans.

👨‍💼What’s the conclusion then? This suggests that AI-generated text can be very difficult to distinguish from human-generated text, especially on social media platforms where people are constantly bombarded with information.

👩🏻‍💻Tips to master prompt engineering

  • Define output length - If you are asking a chatbot for a summary of a factual topic, you can specify a short output length. For example, instead of saying "Write a cover letter for me," you can say "Write a cover letter for me within 100 words." This will tell the chatbot that you only want a short summary of the most important points.

  • Give context - Even though large language models can remember previous conversations, it is always better to provide context when you want accurate and concise answers. Without context, the bot might as well hallucinate.

  • Refine and reiterate - It is important to iterate and refine the prompts based on their performance until the desired output is achieved. This means that you should start with a basic prompt and then make adjustments until you get the desired results.
