A market that priced AI compute quietly vanished, and Commerce says it never asked. Google shipped two models that think while they talk. And Anthropic leased a corner of Queensland.

Commerce says it never asked. Not this market, not any market, not once.

WHAT HAPPENED

Semafor's Reed Albergotti and Liz Hoffman reported on Tuesday that the Commerce Department ordered the prediction market Kalshi to take down its AI compute futures product, citing national security. The product pulled together several markets where traders bet on the cost of renting Nvidia chips and turned them into a single forecast of where compute prices were heading. Kalshi complied quietly, and the individual markets underneath it are still trading. The same report says Commerce pressed the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to pause approvals of new compute contracts for sixty days, which would hold up listings from CME, ICE and the startup Architect Financial Technologies. Commerce told Semafor it has never once asked Kalshi to take down this market or any other markets and called the reporting false. Kalshi declined to comment and the CFTC did not respond.

WHY IT MATTERS

Compute has spent three years being priced in private. Every gigawatt contract, every neocloud loan written against GPUs as collateral, every lab's cost of goods sits on numbers only the counterparties can see. A public futures curve would have been the first thing to make those numbers arguable by outsiders, and the people quoted in the story say the quiet part, which is that a falling curve on older chips marks down the collateral under a lot of debt. What is being protected here is not the chips. It is the opacity, and opacity is the last input in this industry that nobody has to buy.

OUR TAKE

Read the denial closely. Commerce denied asking Kalshi to take down a market, and the thing reported taken down was a product built on top of markets, which is a narrower object than the one the denial covers. The sixty day CFTC pause is the part that leaves a trace, because a pause has an end date and an end date can be checked.

Watch the CFTC calendar. If no new compute futures contract is approved for any exchange before the middle of November, the pause was real whatever anybody said this week. If CME or ICE lists one in October, Semafor got a piece of this wrong.

The pair are built for voice and the split between them is cost against depth. Extended Thinking runs multi step reasoning inside a live conversation rather than stopping to think first, and Google says it takes first place on Artificial Analysis's Speech to Speech Quality Index at 82.6, scores 97.7% on Big Bench Audio reasoning and completes 68.6% of tasks on the τ-Voice agentic benchmark, falling to 35.1% on Sierra's banking version of it. Both models handle 97 languages and switch between them mid conversation. Salesforce, ServiceNow, Genspark and Lumeris are named as early partners.

The Western Downs Digital Park will cover roughly 725 hectares near Dalby in western Queensland, built by the Singaporean developer Zerra DC, and it will draw power equivalent to about 1.5 million Australian households. Anthropic wants to be running there in 2027, though construction is expected to take four to six years and the lease still needs Foreign Investment Review Board approval. The site will answer Claude queries rather than train models. Premier David Crisafulli called it a major win for jobs and power prices. Maranoa MP David Littleproud said reliability and cost for existing homes, farmers and businesses cannot be sacrificed.

⚡️ YOUR MOVE

FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THE LIFE THEY WANT, NOW.

  • 🦊 Mistral is now inside Firefox. Smart Window is in beta across France and North America, conversations are not kept on Mozilla's servers by default, and both sides committed to zero data retention. → Switch it on

  • 💷 Deloitte asked 25,000 UK workers and found £958 million a year of their own money going on GenAI, with 31% using it without telling their employer. → Count your shadow bill

  • 📄 Open weights and open source are not the same thing, and the Linux Foundation has a licence in front of the OSI to settle it. If you ship on somebody else's weights, the licence is the risk. → Read it before you build

  • 💳 Meta One puts Meta AI behind a subscription across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, with plans running from $2.99 to $499 a month. → See what you now pay for

  • New York Put A Price On A Megawatt – Hochul's framework asks data centre developers for $1 million per megawatt of utility demand, so a 50 megawatt site carries a $50 million community investment.

  • ByteDance Spun Out Its Drug Lab – Anew Labs raised $290 million at a $1.5 billion valuation with HSG, IDG Capital and Hillhouse leading, and ByteDance keeps 56%.

  • Crusoe Booked Perplexity's Whole Lifecycle – The multi year deal covers training on GB300 NVL72 clusters and production inference, and Crusoe is handing Perplexity Enterprise Pro to its own 1,800 staff.

Three stories about which numbers get to be public. A market that would have put a visible price on compute stopped publishing, and the only thing left to check is whether new contracts get approved. Google led with benchmark scores because a score is the one claim a buyer can test for themselves. And the Queensland deal is known in this much detail because a development application had to be filed with a council, not because anybody chose to announce it. Every number you can see this week is one somebody was obliged to show you.

Trust the numbers somebody had to publish.
