AI gives Russia, China new tools to divide society and undermine U.S. image, intel agencies say

👨‍💻News - Reports from U.S. intelligence agencies have highlighted that Russia and China are now using artificial intelligence (AI) to damage America's international standing and deepen societal divisions within the United States.

ℹ️Key takeaways -

  • The annual worldwide threat assessment, presented to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday, suggested that Russia's influencers are exploring new technologies, including generative AI, to bolster their influence and expand their reach among Western audiences.

  • The report noted that China has displayed increased sophistication in experimenting with artificial intelligence software. It also mentioned that Chinese government actors have enhanced their abilities to carry out covert influence operations and spread disinformation.

  • When questioned about the use of AI-enabled tools by foreign adversaries to spread disinformation prior to the 2024 election, FBI Director Christopher Wray stated during the hearing that "AI is something that all of our most significant adversaries are considering to enhance their efforts."

  • He further mentioned that while it's unclear if AI tools have specifically been used to target voters, the agency is actively monitoring this as a new aspect of ongoing information warfare.

  • Moreover, when questioned by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida regarding the potential threat posed by TikTok, Wray acknowledged the possibility that TikTok's U.S. branch could be influenced by the Chinese government to employ algorithms capable of targeting specific political candidates in the U.S. election.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni announces €1 billion investment fund for AI Projects

🍝News - On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced during an AI conference in Rome that Italy intends to establish a 1 billion euro investment fund to support Artificial Intelligence projects.

  • Italy aims to leverage its presidency of the Group of Seven major democracies this year to address the influence of AI on employment and inequality, while also establishing protective measures for its advancement.

  • In line with this, Meloni said in a video message, "We are convinced that there can and must be an Italian way to artificial intelligence," adding that the government is working on a bill to regulate the sector in Italy.

  • Cabinet Undersecretary Alessio Butti announced that as part of forthcoming legislation to be introduced in the coming weeks, Rome intends to establish a body tasked with supervising and supporting the implementation of the national AI strategy.

Ex-OpenAI researchers develop ChatGPT-inspired AI to teach robots new skills

👨‍🔬News - Covariant, a robotics startup founded by ex-OpenAI, is developing an advanced software to enhance robots' perception of their environment and improving their grasp of language.

🤔What exactly are they trying to create? Instead of building robots, Covariant is working on creating software that powers robots, with a focus on those deployed in warehouses and distribution centers.

To achieve this, the team is using technology development methods used for chatbots to create AI that assists robots in navigating and interacting with the physical world. This technology also enables robots to comprehend English language extensively, allowing people to converse with them as if they were interacting with ChatGPT.

Like ChatGPT and other AI tools, Covariant's AI technology will learn by analyzing vast amounts of digital data gathered over years from cameras and sensors in warehouses. Ultimately, the company's technology, called R.F.M. (robotics foundational model), will combine data from images, sensors, and text to provide robots with a deeper understanding of their environment.
