Pope Francis along with AI experts releases a handbook on the ethics of AI

🍵News - The Vatican has released a handbook on the ethics of artificial intelligence, which was co-created by Pope Francis and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. The handbook, titled "Ethics in the Age of Disruptive Technologies: An Operational Roadmap," aims to guide the tech industry in using AI ethically.

While many people are asking governments to make rules for AI, Pope Francis and his company are stressing self-regulation.

🕵🏼‍♂️What exactly does the handbook entail?

  • Besides laying out a set of principles, the book says that it is better to build value into technology and the companies that develop AI from the start, instead of fixing problems after they happen.

  • The handbook gives one example of a value that companies should have: ensuring that their actions are for the common good of humanity and the environment.

As per Pope Francis' team, the goal is to empower people inside companies to use AI ethically in their everyday work. The handbook is written in a way that business people and engineers will easily understand.

UK consumers' trust in AI remains high, despite concerns about fake news: Report

👨🏼‍💻News - A new study by Capgemini found that UK consumers are increasingly embracing artificial intelligence.

The study, which surveyed 10,000 people across 10 countries, found that 74% of UK consumers trust AI to undertake tasks such as generating written content, providing health tips, and offering relationship advice.

🤶🏼What’s more? The study also found that UK consumers are already using AI in various ways. For example, 52% of respondents said they had used AI to generate emails, essays, stories, and poems. 23% said they had used AI to find information on topics such as science, history, business, or technology. Only 16% were using it to fine-tune their content, and 11% to analyze text to better understand it.

👨🏼‍🚒Were people concerned about fake news? Some consumers were concerned about the potential for AI to generate fake news.

The study found that these concerns are not widespread. In fact, 49% of respondents said they were unconcerned about AI generating fake news, and only 33% were concerned about AI failing to recognize the contributions of artists and writers.

MIT researcher finds new way to make medical data labeling more fun and accurate

🕵🏼Context of the News - Medical data labeling is the process of assigning labels to medical data. A label is a piece of information that is added to a piece of data to provide context. For example, an image of a tumor might be labeled as "malignant" or "benign." This label provides information about the type of tumor that is present in the image.

Now, medical data labeling can be tedious and time-consuming. This is because it requires a high level of expertise and accuracy. As a result, there is a shortage of medically labeled data.

🤹🏽‍♀️News - To address this issue, MIT researcher Erik Duhaime has created DiagnosUs app. It is a gamified medical data labeling platform. Users are presented with real-world medical cases and are asked to diagnose the patient based on the information provided. They are then given feedback on their diagnoses and cash rewards too.

The app also allows users to compete against each other to see who can diagnose the most cases correctly.

🏋🏽‍♀️What’s so special about the app? The correct answers in the form of labeled medical data are being used to train AI algorithms to improve their accuracy.

So far, the results have been phenomenal. A recent study found that the platform was able to label lung ultrasounds with an accuracy of 96%, which was comparable to the accuracy of experts (97%).
