👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

UK, western allies unite to equip Ukraine with AI-powered swarm drones

♨️News - The UK, along with the US and other allied nations, is collaborating to supply Ukraine with thousands of advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with artificial intelligence.

The drones are set to be dispatched to Ukraine in the coming months to aid in their conflict with Russia. Notably, this comes after a pledge to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with one million drones was made during a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels on 15 February.

🧨What’s more? As per reports, AI-powered drones would be deployed in large groups that would communicate with each other to target Russian positions, with no human operator needed to control each one.

Moreover, while drones won't replace artillery shells, which are traditional ammunition fired from cannons, they can help in addressing shortages of such ammunition and add flexibility to military operations on the battlefield.

Military strategists in the West who are working on this technology believe it could enable Ukraine to overpower certain Russian positions.  Additionally, according to Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of NATO’s military committee, Ukraine's use  of AI-powered drones could prove more effective than Russian artillery fire.

Otter CEO claims AI avatars could attend meetings for you within a year

😲News - In a bold statement, Sam Liang, CEO of Otter, a tech company specializing in AI, announced that by the end of this year, AI avatars will be capable of attending work meetings in place of individuals.

Liang stated that Otter has already made progress toward achieving this objective and hopes that a working prototype can be developed later this year.

🤖How will this work though? Liang explained that for AI avatars to mimic individuals accurately, they need to be trained using recorded meeting notes and voice data of those individuals. This will ensure that they can interact and speak just like them.

He added that with sufficient data, the avatars should be able to mimic the speech patterns of individual workers, engage in discussions, and provide responses that reflect the worker's viewpoint.

🤔Are there any challenges? Liang believes AI avatars will boost productivity, giving employees more time for creative tasks. However, he acknowledged that teaching these avatars to understand emotions, enabling them to react appropriately during meetings, will be challenging.

Meta scientist Yann LeCun says house pets are smarter than best AI systems today

☕News - At the recent 2024 World Governments Summit in Dubai, Yann LeCun, a Turing Award Laureate and Meta's chief scientist, stated that AI won't replace humans in overseeing and directing socio-economic tasks across different industries anytime soon.

During a discussion titled 'Will AI Lead Us to Our End?',  LeCun explained that AI experts and scientists still need more time to make technology that can think like humans. He emphasized that currently, AI's cognitive abilities are not even on par with those of cats and dogs, let alone humans.

🤓What else did he say? LeCun pointed out that AI systems don't have the natural organizational skills of humans. He added that they aren't fast or accurate enough at handling complex problems either. He stressed that these abilities are important for thinking critically and analytically, but AI technology still lacks them.

According to LeCun, the next phase of AI advancement involves developing safer and more effective AI systems. He highlighted that these are essential for establishing communication networks and the Internet infrastructure, crucial for managing human life and business, and stressed AI's role in complementing rather than replacing humans.

🤗Technical jargon simplified

  • Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning where an agent learns to behave in an environment by trial and error. The agent is given a reward for taking actions that lead to desired outcomes and a penalty for taking actions that lead to undesired outcomes.

  • GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is a type of AI model that can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way. GPT learns to identify patterns in the data and then uses those patterns to generate new text.

  • Sentiment analysis is an AI technique that analyzes text to determine the emotional tone behind it. It can be used to classify text as positive, negative, neutral, or to identify specific emotions such as anger, happiness, sadness. It is used in a variety of applications, such as customer service, marketing, and social media monitoring.

🌞 Mythbuster

Myth - AI only consists of robots and androids

Fact - While robots often come to mind when thinking of AI, robotics and AI are separate scientific fields with distinct purposes. Although robots do rely on AI for automation, artificial intelligence extends beyond robotics to various technologies, such as facial recognition in smartphones, smart homes, and healthcare equipment.
