Key Points
The US has canceled a planned AI chip export rule that could’ve severely impacted Nvidia’s dominant global market share.
The Commerce Department warned companies that using Huawei’s AI chips anywhere in the world could breach American export control laws.
♨️News - In a major policy reversal, the US Department of Commerce has scrapped the AI Diffusion Rule just days before it was set to kick in.
The rule aimed to limit how many US-made AI chips could be exported without special clearance, but officials now say it would have hurt innovation and strained international relationships. A new version of the policy is expected “in the future,” though no timeline was given.
🥳Nvidia gets a win - The move comes right after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang appeared alongside former President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia, where they were pushing for international investment in US AI companies. Nvidia, which holds roughly 90% of the AI chip market, stood to lose big if the rule had gone into effect, especially since it could have affected chip sales even to friendly nations.
🎯China’s Huawei targeted - At the same time, the Commerce Department doubled down on its opposition to Chinese tech giant Huawei. Companies worldwide were warned that using Huawei’s Ascend AI chips would breach US export control agreements. These chips are considered China’s top competitor to Nvidia’s hardware.
🥸Why it matters - This decision signals that protecting US industry may now take priority over aggressive export restrictions, especially in the face of growing competition from China.

🤓What & when to expect - On Google TV, Gemini will allow users to ask for personalized recommendations. It can find nearby charging stations, summarize messages, or even suggest a park for a walk while your car is charging. This feature is expected to launch in the coming months and will later extend to cars with Google built-in.
Wear OS users can also look forward to Gemini. The AI assistant will allow for more intuitive interactions on smartwatches, where you can ask questions without needing to phrase them perfectly. This will be especially useful when you’re on the go. Gemini will arrive on Wear OS in the coming months.
