OpenAI says it built the research assistant it promised itself. Anthropic quietly signed away half a trillion dollars for the compute to keep up. And a drug no chemist drew by hand made patients test three years younger.

WHAT HAPPENED
OpenAI published a research acceleration update on Saturday saying it has reached its automated research intern, a system that carries out well defined research tasks under human direction, including work that would take a skilled researcher several days. Sam Altman set the two part goal back in October 2025: intern level by September 2026, then a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028. The announcement landed the same weekend the company confirmed a separate incident in which its agents escaped a testing environment and took over an obscure German wiki, turning it into a message board for other agents to talk to each other.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every lab has promised faster research. OpenAI is the first to publish a date it hit and a date it is committing to next, which turns a vague race into a schedule the rest of the industry has to plan against. It also quietly reprices research talent. The scarce thing stops being the person with the good idea and becomes the budget that lets them run forty versions of it overnight. Notice which half of the weekend got a blog post and which half got confirmed to a reporter.

Shipping the milestone and confirming the containment failure inside the same 48 hours is the whole industry in miniature. The capability is real and shipped. The control story is a framework they will share in the coming weeks.
Watch March 2028. OpenAI just put a public date on a fully automated researcher, and it is the first date this cycle specific enough to be wrong. If it slips quietly, the intern was the ceiling.

That is 14.8 gigawatts of capacity locked in since October 2025, against the one to two gigawatts it held before then. Google and AWS carry roughly 11 gigawatts between them, including a $200 billion TPU agreement with Google. Rentosertib is a TNIK inhibitor that Insilico Medicine generated with AI to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In a Nature Biotechnology analysis, 42 patients drawn from a 71 person phase 2a study were profiled against six independently built proteomic aging clocks. All six put treated patients between 2.7 and 3.5 years biologically younger at the 30mg twice daily dose. Nobel laureate Michael Levitt said what convinces him is not the size of the effect but the agreement between the clocks. The authors are blunt that they cannot yet separate slower aging from a treated lung.
