WHAT HAPPENED
Minutes from the Federal Reserve's September meeting came out this week, and they name the AI buildout as one of the forces pushing prices up. Several officials said its scale and pace had kept surprising them to the upside, and some warned that demand could outrun supply. Every official at the table backed the rate rise, the first in three years. Most of them want another before the end of the year.
WHY IT MATTERS
The buildout has been argued about as a technology story, a power story and a jobs story. Monetary policy is a different room, and what gets decided there reaches people who have never typed a prompt. Once a central bank treats the buildout as a reason to keep money expensive, everyone borrowing to build anything else pays for it too.
OUR TAKE
The obvious read is a central bank listing every inflation risk it can name, with AI somewhere near the bottom. We think the buildout is the only item on that list nobody at the Fed can slow down, and the giveaway is the word surprising. Tariffs are a policy choice. Energy is a cycle. Something that keeps beating your own forecast is neither.
Watch whether the next set of minutes pulls AI spending out as its own line. If it gets named separately, or an official says out loud that rates are higher because of data centers, the buildout has become a policy problem with no obvious lever. If it stays one clause inside a list of risks, the Fed was noting the weather.

Australia set out plans today to make frontier AI developers prove their safety systems work, rather than wait for harm and ask questions afterwards. The approach is lifted from the way governments supervise banks, aviation and workplace safety, where the duty is to run a system that catches risk before it lands. National standards are due by the end of this year, with legislation planned for next.
If you could only keep one, which would you want?

OpenAI began rolling GPT-6 and a new interface it calls Intelligent UI to paying ChatGPT accounts on Wednesday, with free accounts following a day behind. Answers can now arrive as things you tap rather than text you read, including charts, forms, checklists and small tools assembled on the spot. The change is confined to the chat tab, so the coding and work surfaces stay exactly as they were.
🔌 MCP CORNER
THREE SERVERS WORTH WIRING UP THIS WEEK.
An MCP server plugs your assistant into another app, so it stops describing the work and starts doing it.
Upwork MCP Server SPONSORED: Your agent finds the talent, sends the proposal and tracks the contract, drafting every change for your approval.
GitHub MCP Server: Hands your agent the whole repo, issues, pull requests and code search, without leaving the chat.
YouTube Transcript MCP: Pulls the text out of any video so your agent reads it instead of you.
⚡️ YOUR MOVE
FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THE LIFE THEY WANT, NOW.
🧠 Anthropic cut the price of its smallest model to roughly a tenth of the last one, $0.10 per million input tokens on ordinary prompts, with a million tokens of context and a dial for how hard it thinks. The new tokenizer counts the same text as about 30% more tokens, so check the bill before you believe the discount. → Reprice your cheap tier
🦀 Somebody spent about $24,000 of Claude time porting the TypeScript compiler to Rust. All 181,711 ported tests pass, it runs about 1.6 times faster than the official build, and the author says he has never read a line of the code. → Read the receipt
🔓 A flaw rated 9.8 in LMCache, the cache layer sitting under a lot of vLLM setups, lets an attacker with no credentials run code. There is no fixed release, a working exploit went public this week, and the official container images run as root. → Lock your cache down
🎯 At Pwn2Own in Ireland, researchers took $40,000 each for breaking OpenAI Codex and LiteLLM, part of 32 zero days claimed on the opening day alone. AI tooling is no longer the novelty bracket at a hacking contest. → Audit your agent stack
TSMC Had Its Biggest Quarter Yet – Quarterly revenue reached NT$1.49 trillion, about $46.7 billion and up 51%, ahead of what analysts expected, and Taiwanese media report the company is weighing wafer price rises of 3% to 6% next year.
Manus Raised $500 Million Without Meta – Butterfly Effect, the company behind the Manus agent, closed a round led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital at a reported $4 billion, double the price Meta had agreed before Beijing ordered that deal unwound in April.
Perplexity Put Its Retrieval Models On Hugging Face – The company released two models that index text, images and whole pages into one shared space, so a query run against one size can search what another size indexed.
Descript: Edits your recording by letting you delete the words.
HeyGen: Puts you on camera on the day you cannot face a camera.
Fireflies AI: Sits in the meeting so you can stop taking notes in it.
Writesonic: Fills the blank page you have been staring at since Tuesday.
Three stories about an argument moving rooms. The AI buildout spent two years being debated by technologists and now sits in the minutes of an institution that can make money expensive for everybody. Australia stopped asking the labs what they promise and started drafting the thing that asks what they can prove. And OpenAI quietly closed the question of whether an answer should be text at all. Nobody won any of these debates. They just got moved somewhere the stakes are higher.
Find out where the argument moved.
