An OpenAI engineer is in federal custody over something found behind a television. ASML says it cannot build fast enough, and it named the years. Four hundred scientists want the biggest models unplugged.

It was behind the television. Five days later a camera caught him coming back to look.
WHAT HAPPENED
Federal prosecutors charged an OpenAI engineer with hiding an audio recording device in a conference room at the company's San Francisco office. Staff found it plugged into a port on the back of a television, in a room kept for confidential talks about research, products and the business. He was arrested on Friday and appeared in court this week, with a detention hearing set for October 19. OpenAI called the FBI, fired him, and says it has no sign he reached model weights, source code or customer data.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every lab has spent two years hardening itself against outsiders, with badge systems, device rules and export controls aimed at people trying to get in. This was somebody who already had a badge and a reason to be in the room. The thing worth taking from a frontier lab is not only the model, it is what gets said out loud before the model exists.
OUR TAKE
The obvious read is one employee doing something strange. We think the target was the conversation rather than the code, and the giveaway is where the device was. He did not go after a server. He went after the room where people argue about what to build next.
Watch what OpenAI changes rather than what it says. If meeting rooms get swept and recording rules get rewritten inside a month, the company has decided the room is the asset. If the response stays with the lawyers and the courts, it has decided this was one person and not a hole.

The bottleneck moved again, and this time it is the machines that make the machines.
ASML, which builds the equipment every advanced chip is printed with, said customers now want more capacity than it can supply in 2027 and 2028. It had already promised to raise output by 30% in each of those years. Its chief executive said that will not be enough, and some buyers are trying to book machines further out than that.
If you could only keep one, which would you want?

Two of the three people who built this asked for a fence. The third would not sign.
Roughly four hundred researchers signed a letter asking for a global body that could force high risk models to run fully disconnected from outside networks during early testing, plus a public register of serious incidents. Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio led it. Yann LeCun, who shares their Turing Award, declined to sign.
🔌 MCP CORNER
THREE SERVERS WORTH WIRING UP THIS WEEK.
An MCP server plugs your assistant into another app, so it stops describing the work and starts doing it.
Metabase MCP Server: Lets your assistant query the dashboards your team already trusts, so the number comes back answered.
Filesystem MCP Server: Gives your assistant real access to your own folders, so it edits the actual files instead of describing them.
OpenAPI MCP Server: Hands your agent any documented API, so a service nobody has built a server for still gets used.
⚡️ YOUR MOVE
FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THE LIFE THEY WANT, NOW.
🧰 Anthropic spent five months replacing Git with a system of its own, because Claude pushed the company from roughly 2,500 merges a day in May to more than 30,000 by September. It is not open source and the team says you should not try to copy it, but the write up names exactly which parts of Git break at agent speed. → Read the design
🔍 A new benchmark scores coding agents on the things nobody asked them to do, and the numbers are ugly. Dependency misreads hit 98.5% of cases, quiet damage to the environment 53%, and edits to your own input files 50.5%. The authors' fix cut the worst of it by about half. → Audit your agent
👁️ Prime Intellect bought Moondream, the team behind small open vision models and the Photon inference engine, and both founders are joining to run inference. Moondream 3.1 is live on Prime's platform now, and existing Moondream Cloud customers get credits within days. → Move your vision workload
💻 The Justice Department charged 14 people over a scheme that put North Korean engineers inside more than 70 US employers on stolen identities, with searches at over 40 Texas homes running laptops on their behalf. The FBI now warns the crews pay Americans to sit the interviews for them. → Vet your remote hires
Apple And OpenAI Are In Court Over Trade Secrets – A judge in San Jose heard Apple's bid to bar OpenAI from using confidential information it says was pulled out of former Apple employees, alongside OpenAI's motion to throw the whole case out.
Nvidia Put $250 Million Of Compute Behind UK Safety Work – The five year donation funds agent safety and security research across the British research community, with labs led by Oxford, UCL and Imperial named, delivered through cloud partners hosting inside the UK.
Google Opened Its Science Models To 200 European Researchers – AlphaFold 3, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve, WeatherNext and AlphaEarth go to up to 200 scientists along with $3 million in compute credits, from Google DeepMind and Google Cloud.
Midjourney: Turns a sentence into the image you could never have briefed anyone to make.
Canva Magic Write: Fills the empty text box on your design before the deadline does.
ClickUp AI Writing Assistant: Writes the project update your team was going to chase you for.
Scite: Shows you whether anyone has actually backed the paper you are about to cite.
Three stories about perimeters, and how little any of them hold. OpenAI's was crossed by somebody who already worked there, which is the kind of gap a badge system is built to create. ASML's is a physical limit nobody can argue with, which makes it the only honest ceiling in this industry. And four hundred scientists spent the week asking for a perimeter around the models themselves, which tells you plainly that they do not think one exists.
