Singapore to invest $1 billion in AI development over next five years

🤑News - On 16 February, Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the island country plans to invest more than $1 billion in AI computing, talent, and industry development over the next five years. Wong revealed this during his Budget 2024 speech, emphasizing the importance of artificial intelligence in driving future growth.

😺What will this money be used for? Some of the funding will go towards acquiring advanced chips for AI progress and application. This is essential because there is currently a global shortage of AI chips, which could hinder the expansion of AI initiatives or the widespread adoption of AI technology.

Singapore will also team up with big companies, both domestic and international, to set up their AI centers within the city-state. According to Wong, this initiative will promote collaboration and innovation within the industry, ultimately driving more value for the economy.

🐸What's more? Because running AI models requires a fast and strong network, Singapore will invest more resources in upgrading its nationwide broadband network. By the second half of the decade, this upgraded network will offer broadband speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second, which is ten times faster than current speeds in most households. This will make it easier for everyone to use new technologies like AI and immersive media.

Google rolls out Gemini 1.5 Pro with  massive context window that beats ChatGPT and Claude

🤩News - Google has launched Gemini 1.5 Pro, the latest addition to its Gemini series of GenAI models. The company has made the new model available to developers and enterprise users, with a broader consumer rollout coming soon.

Designed to replace Gemini 1.0 Pro, Gemini 1.5 Pro is on par with the recently launched high-end Gemini Ultra, and it outperformed Gemini 1.0 Pro in 87% of benchmark tests.

🔥 What makes this new model special? Gemini 1.5 has a huge context window, allowing it to handle bigger questions and look at more information at once. The context window of a model refers to the input data it considers before generating a response, such as text from various sources like a question, movie script, or email.

Gemini 1.5 Pro has a maximum context window of 1 million tokens, exceeding the previous leader Anthropic, which has a 200,000-token window, as well as OpenAI's GPT-4, which has a 128,000-token limit.

🧏🏻‍♀️Tokens can be hard to understand, so here's a simple explanation of what this means for you -

  • Gemini 1.5 Pro can process around 700,000 words or approximately 30,000 lines of code, which is 35 times more than what Gemini 1.0 Pro can handle.

  • Additionally, since the model is multimodal, it's not restricted to text; It can process up to 11 hours of audio or one hour of video in multiple languages.

  • However, it's important to note that the current version of Gemini 1.5 Pro, accessible to most developers and customers through a limited preview starting today, is only capable of processing around 100,000 words at a time.

OpenAI teases ‘Sora,’ its new text-to-video AI model

👩🏻‍💻News -  On 15 January, OpenAI announced that it has been working on a new text-to-video AI model.

The software named Sora is currently being tested by red teamers, who are evaluating the model for flaws and risks. Additionally, OpenAI has made the model available to select artists, designers, and filmmakers for feedback.

😁What's it good for?

  • The text-to-video model enables users to produce photorealistic videos up to a minute in length simply by providing text prompts.

  • According to OpenAI's introductory blog post, Sora can craft detailed scenes with lots of characters, movements, and backgrounds, making everything look real.

  • What's cool is that Sora understands how things work in the real world, which allows it to accurately represent props, as well as create emotionally expressive characters.

  • Besides this, it can also take a picture and turn it into a video, fill in missing frames in existing videos, or add more frames to extend their duration.

🤨What's the catch? The demos generated by Sora, featured in OpenAI's blog post, showcase various scenes such as an aerial view of California during the gold rush and footage resembling a Tokyo train ride. While impressive, these demos are not flawless, with some revealing typical AI traits, like oddly moving floors in a museum video.

OpenAI acknowledges that the model is still a work in progress and might have trouble getting the physics right in complicated scenes.
