Samsung led the largest equity round in European tech history, and no American lab saw a euro of it. Amazon handed part of its chip future to a phone company. And a worm hijacked WeChat through calls nobody answered.

Samsung led it. Nvidia and Microsoft came along.
WHAT HAPPENED
Mistral AI closed a 3 billion euro Series D on Tuesday, the largest equity round ever raised by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led it, joined by the EU backed Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT, PSG Equity, Microsoft and Nvidia. The round values the French lab above 21 billion euros, up from 11.7 billion a year ago. Mistral serves more than 125 enterprise customers across 20 countries and expects to reach 1 billion euros in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026. The cash goes into data centers in France and Sweden, on top of the 4 billion euros the company is already spending on them.
WHY IT MATTERS
Europe has spent three years being told it can regulate AI or build it, and the continent's answer just got funded in part by the two American companies that supply everybody. Microsoft and Nvidia are now inside the balance sheet of the sovereignty argument, which makes the word sovereign do a lot of quiet work. The more telling name is Samsung, a hardware company buying a seat at a model lab instead of signing a supply contract. Arthur Mensch says the compute Mistral owns will roughly double over five years, and that is a manufacturing plan, not a software one. Europe's route to scale turns out to be concrete and electricity, same as everyone else's.
OUR TAKE
The valuation is not the story and neither is the flag. Mistral is being financed to become a compute landlord that also ships models, and that is a narrower, heavier business than the one most people think they just bought into.
Watch the 1 billion euro revenue claim. It carries a specific date, December 31, which makes it the first European AI number this cycle that can be checked instead of argued about.

The chips target AI inference inside AWS data centers, paired with optical connectivity running up to 1.6 terabits. It builds on the roadmap Qualcomm laid out in June, the Dragonfly C1000 with more than 250 custom Oryon cores and the AI300 inference accelerator, both due to sample in 2028. Qualcomm also gets to run its own chip design workloads on AWS. Terms and volumes were not disclosed. The stock rose about 10% on the day, on nine times its average volume.

Security firm Calif found a memory corruption bug in WeChat's VoIP stack and used its own AI to write the first working exploit in about two days. A polished worm followed inside a week. It runs while the phone is still ringing, on iOS and Android, then calls the victim's contacts and starts again. WeChat has more than a billion users. Tencent shipped patches on August 21, Android 8.0.77 and iOS 8.0.76, and added a server-side fix so nobody had to update to be protected.

Arm Is Standardising Robots – Total Design for Physical AI arrives with more than 80 partners and a capability framework that grades machines the way SAE grades self driving cars.

Consensus AI: Ask a research question and get an answer backed by actual published papers.
Chatbase: Turn your own docs into a chatbot that answers customers at midnight.
Fellow: Runs the agenda and the notes so nobody on your team has to.
Three stories, one shape. Money, silicon and attack code all moved toward whoever owns the layer underneath. Samsung bought into a lab that is really building data centers. Amazon bought a chip partner instead of renting more of somebody else's. And a small research team showed that the cost of writing a working exploit has collapsed to about a week. The advantage this year is not the model sitting on top. It is the thing it runs on, and who is allowed to touch it.
