New AI model can predict irregular heartbeat 30 minutes before onset with 80% accuracy

👨🏻‍⚕️News - Researchers from the University of Luxembourg have developed an advanced AI model capable of forecasting cardiac arrhythmia, specifically atrial fibrillation, up to 30 minutes before its onset. Cardiac arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat, and atrial fibrillation is its most prevalent form, characterized by irregular beating in the heart's upper chambers. 

The AI model, named WARN (Warning of Atrial fibRillatioN), can be easily integrated into smartphones to process data from smartwatches. This gives patients timely alerts, allowing them to take preventive measures to maintain a stable cardiac rhythm.

🧐How accurate is it though? The model has demonstrated an impressive 80% accuracy in predicting the transition from a normal cardiac rhythm to atrial fibrillation, marking a significant advancement in proactive cardiac care.

For context, the model was developed by training it on 24-hour recordings from 350 patients at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China. By using the heart rate data, the deep learning model learned how to identify different phases of cardiac activity, including normal sinus rhythm, pre-atrial fibrillation, and atrial fibrillation. This training helps the model calculate the likelihood of an imminent cardiac episode, providing a "probability of danger" to the patient.

Major tech companies pledge action to combat AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery online

🤖Context of the news - Generative AI has led to growing concerns about deepfake images, including the spread of fake child sexual abuse material (CSAM) photos online. A recent report by Stanford researchers revealed that a widely used dataset for training AI models contained links to CSAM imagery. 

Additionally, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) tip line, already struggling to manage the volume of reported CSAM content, is now facing an overwhelming influx of AI-generated CSAM images. 

🤠News -  In response, major tech companies like Google, Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Amazon have pledged to review their AI training data for CSAM and eliminate it from future models.

Anthropic, Civitai, Metaphysic, Mistral AI, and Stability AI are also among the signatories. 

🤔What exactly will they do? The companies have agreed to a new set of principles aimed at reducing the spread of CSAM. These include commitments to:

  • Ensure that training datasets are free of CSAM.

  • Avoid datasets with a high risk of containing CSAM.

  • Remove any CSAM imagery or links from data sources.

Furthermore, they have pledged to "stress-test" AI models to prevent the generation of CSAM imagery and will only release models that have been evaluated for child safety.

Elon Musk rides the Optimus Robot hype train to rescue Tesla from sales slump

☕News - Elon Musk has announced that Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus, could be ready for sale by the end of next year. He mentioned that he expects Optimus to be able to perform tasks in the factory by the end of this year. 

Musk further stated that Optimus robots could potentially become Tesla's most valuable asset. He explained that with a humanoid robot capable of navigating reality and performing tasks as requested, the potential for economic growth would be limitless.

🛟Is Optimus the savior Tesla needs? Musk's optimistic comments about Tesla's robotics efforts come at a time when the electric vehicle giant is grappling with declining sales. On Tuesday, the company reported a 9% year-over-year drop in quarterly revenue, marking its largest revenue decline since 2012. With all these challenges, it looks like Musk is determined to hype up the potential of the company's ongoing projects.

However, it's important to note that Musk has a history of not delivering on ambitious promises. For instance, in 2019, he expressed confidence that Tesla would have 1 million autonomous robotaxis on the road by 2020, a promise that remains unfulfilled. So, whether the Optimus robot will actually hit the market by the end of next year is still up in the air.
