📢 What else is happening
Reddit has decided the search traffic is not coming back. Canada put public money into an AI lab and wanted something in writing. And Mistral opened up its largest model yet.
WHAT HAPPENED
Reddit told shareholders it will stop letting people without an account read its content, starting as a test in a few markets outside the United States. The company says traffic from search has fallen sharply as people take their answers from chatbots instead of clicking through. Its chief executive calls the change a key piece of work to hold on to new readers. He says it also gives Reddit more signal for advertising, keeps its posts harder to scrape, and helps it meet new rules.
WHY IT MATTERS
For twenty years the arrangement was simple. Sites gave their words to search engines, and search engines sent readers back. Reddit is the first big forum to say out loud that the second half of that arrangement has stopped paying, and the answer it reached for is not better writing but a sign-in box, which turns an open library into a members’ club.
OUR TAKE
The obvious read is that this is about keeping AI companies away from the data. We think it is about advertising, and the giveaway is the order the reasons came in: better targeting signal was named first, ahead of scraping and ahead of regulation. A logged-in reader is a known reader, and a known reader sells for more.

The AI notetaker that gets the hard words right
Your AI is only as good as what you feed it. Feed it a transcript with your product names, acronyms, and numbers spelled wrong, and you spend the afternoon hand-fixing the output.
Wispr Flow Notetaker uses your dictionary and calendar, so product names, acronyms, numbers, and uncommon names come out spelled right. It pops up when your meeting starts and captures Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, and Slack huddles with one click, no bot joining the call.
Then your meetings show up inside Claude or ChatGPT through the built-in connector. No copy paste. Try Notetaker free on Mac and Windows.

Governments usually hand out grants. This one asked for shares.
The federal government has committed an equity investment of up to 1.6 billion Canadian dollars in Cohere, the Toronto company that builds AI systems for businesses and governments, alongside private investors including Nvidia and Bell. The money is paid out in stages, and Cohere has to report on what it promised in return, which includes new technical jobs, more computing built in Canada, and keeping its head office and its incorporation at home. Ottawa is calling it a stake in the company's growth rather than a handout.
When you do click a story in here, what makes you?
They nicknamed it the chonk. Now anyone can carry it home.
Mistral has published the weights for Large 4, its flagship model, under a modified open licence that allows commercial use unless you are reselling the model itself as a service. It is a trillion parameter mixture of experts system, it takes images as well as text, and it is tuned for two jobs in particular, writing code and defending networks. Anyone can download it and run it on their own hardware.
🔌 MCP CORNER
THREE SERVERS WORTH WIRING UP THIS WEEK.
An MCP server plugs your assistant into another app, so it stops describing the work and starts doing it.
Railway MCP: Lets your assistant deploy the service and read the logs, so shipping stops meaning a detour through a dashboard.
E2B MCP: Hands your assistant a throwaway sandbox to actually run the code, so you get a result instead of a confident guess.
Airtable MCP: Opens your base to your assistant, so you ask for the record instead of filtering the view by hand.
⚡️ YOUR MOVE
FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THE LIFE THEY WANT, NOW.
🔑 A researcher scanned more than seven million public code repositories on China's biggest code hosting site and pulled out 26,400 keys that still work right now, for cloud accounts and for model providers including OpenAI and DeepSeek. Most were committed in the last two years, by people using personal email addresses, and the scan cost about three thousand dollars to run. If you have ever pasted a key into a file to test something, go and rotate it today. → Rotate your keys
🚫 OpenAI runs a site safety check that decides whether ChatGPT and its coding tools are allowed to open your website at all, and when it says no there is no public reason given and no appeal. Established publishers have been blocked for months without explanation, and the decision is cached for a day at a time, so your own logs will show nothing. If any part of your business depends on being readable by an assistant, test it yourself before you find out the hard way. → Test your own site
🪤 Researchers broke the browser built into five AI coding tools, including Cursor, Copilot, Codex, VS Code and Claude Desktop, and found the same isolation failure in every one. In the worst case a single file inside a project you opened could read your keys, your tokens and your environment files. Two of the five were still unpatched as of yesterday. If your assistant has a browser in it, read which ones are fixed. → Check your coding tool
🔊 ElevenLabs has put out a new sound effects model that follows several instructions in one prompt, so a line describing a room, a door and a voice all at once comes back with all three rather than the loudest one. It also handles music and singing better and adds fewer unwanted artefacts. If you make video or audio and have been stitching effects together one at a time, this is the one to retry your old prompts on. → Try the sound model
China's Spies Handed The Break In To AI Agents – CrowdStrike says a China linked espionage group pointed an agent framework running on DeepSeek at more than 200 organisations in at least 14 countries over 11 days, including foreign ministries, defence and intelligence bodies, nuclear and semiconductor firms and think tanks, with a human steering the agents at decision points and confirmed intrusions at nine of the targets.
A University Just Bought Google's Own Chips – Purdue says it is the first American university to put Google's custom AI chips into its campus computing programme rather than renting them from a cloud, adding about a third more AI capacity for faculty and student research, with the first researchers expected on the system in January.
Iowa And Ohio Would Rather Be Safe Than First – A poll of likely voters in two swing states found 67% in each would rather the United States pass reasonable AI safety rules than always lead the global race, every one of ten proposed rules drew at least 73% support, and more than seven in ten said they would be more likely to back a Senate candidate who supports them.
Elicit: Reads the papers and pulls the findings into a table, so a literature review stops eating your week.
Base44: Turns a description into a working internal app, so the request stops waiting on an engineer.
Reclaim: Defends your calendar on its own, so the focus block survives contact with other people's meetings.
Lumen5: Turns a post you already wrote into a short video, so one piece of work goes further.
Three stories about who gets in. Reddit has decided that a reader without an account is not worth the page, Canada has decided that money without ownership is not worth the cheque, and Mistral has decided that a frontier model without a download link is not worth calling open. Each one is a choice about where to put the gate, and the gate is turning into the product.
Ask who is holding the key.
