👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
Meta, IBM join over 40 companies to create a group dedicated to open-source AI work
📻News - In a significant move to foster open-source artificial intelligence development, Meta Platforms, and IBM have joined forces with over 40 companies and organizations to establish the AI Alliance.
🧐What would be the focus of the AI Alliance? It will prioritize the development of safety and security tools for AI systems, promote the adoption of open-source AI models, and collaborate with academic researchers to advance innovation. Open-source AI models, which are freely accessible and modifiable, are considered a more efficient and transparent approach to AI development compared to proprietary systems.
To guide its operations, the AI Alliance will establish a governing board and a technical oversight committee. Notable participants of the Alliance include Oracle Corp, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD), Intel Corp, and Stability AI, along with esteemed academic institutions like the University of Notre Dame and the Mass Open Cloud Alliance. This diverse group brings together industry expertise and academic rigor, ensuring that the AI Alliance's endeavors are well-informed and impactful. Unsurprisingly, OpenAI is not there in the list.
😁In conclusion - Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, emphasized the benefits of open-source AI, stating, "We believe it's better when AI is developed openly — more people can access the benefits, build innovative products and work on safety."
Former CIA agent reveals ‘Vladimir Putin is lying about Russia’s AI operation’
👮News - A former CIA agent has cast doubt on Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims about the country's AI capabilities. Laura Ballman, in a recent interview, revealed that Russia is actively pursuing AI advancements, contradicting Putin's assertion that AI is a "Western plot."
Ballman pointed to the example of two leading Russian quantum computing scientists, who were accused of spying for China, as evidence of Russia's serious engagement in AI development. She highlighted the significance of their work in Siberia, emphasizing that their disappearance and death, respectively, underscore the gravity of Russia's AI ambitions.
🌟What’s more? Ballman's remarks come amidst Russia's growing focus on AI, as evident in Putin's recent announcement of a new national strategy for AI development. Putin emphasized the importance of integrating AI into Russian society, stating that domestic AI models should reflect the "entire wealth and diversity of world culture."
It is widely believed that the actual landscape of Russian AI development is grim, largely due to Putin’s policies. However, as per the former CIA Agent, that is not the case. Russia is following in China's footsteps in keeping its AI development-related work to itself. Ballman's insights indicate that Russia's AI advancements may be more substantial than previously believed.
UK govt. aims to finalize the AI copyright code by the year-end
📰News - The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) is determined to finalize the AI copyright code by the end of this year. This is despite recent comments from ministers suggesting that the timeline could be pushed into 2024.
The UK government set up a group of people from the tech, creative, and research industries to come up with a set of rules for how AI developers can use copyrighted material. These rules would be voluntary, but the government hopes they will help to balance the needs of AI developers and content creators.
🤔What is the issue that the UK govt. is trying to address?
Right now, there is no clear legal guidance on how much copyrighted material AI developers can use to train their AI systems. This lack of clarity has made it difficult for AI developers in the UK to know what they can and cannot do, which has slowed down the development of AI in the country.
The Getty Images litigation, which is currently ongoing, is also adding to the uncertainty around the use of copyrighted material for AI training.
In a recent move, a UK court has ruled that a lawsuit from Getty Images against Stable Diffusion creator Stability AI can go to trial. Getty Images claims that Stability AI used its copyrighted material to train AI models without permission. The court found that Getty Images' claims have merit and that the case should go to trial.
If Getty Images is successful in its lawsuit, it could have a major impact on the way AI developers use copyrighted material in the future.
