Pentagon works on solution to prevent rogue machines on the battlefield

📓Context of the news - The Pentagon is actively modernizing its arsenal with autonomous weapons, sparking fears of AI-driven 'slaughterbots' or 'killer robots' among the public. 

Additionally, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently warned that AI systems are vulnerable to manipulation through visual tricks or signals. Their researchers found that even small changes to an AI's machine learning (ML) inputs can fool it into mistaking a bus full of people for a tank, causing catastrophic outcomes on the battlefield.

👨‍💻News - To address these issues, the Pentagon launched the GARD research program.

🤔What exactly is GARD? According to Dr. Hava Siegelmann from DARPA's Information Innovation Office the purpose of the GARD, which stands for Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception, is to ensure that ML systems are safe and won't be manipulated by rapidly evolving attack methods.

🥸How will GARD accomplish this? As per the DARPA website, the GARD program is currently working on establishing theoretical foundations for ML systems to identify vulnerabilities, enhance system robustness, and develop new defense mechanisms capable of protecting against various types of attacks. 

Additionally, it is creating a new testing platform to evaluate the reliability of ML systems in various threat scenarios after implementing the new defenses.

South Korea to invest $527 million in AI to enhance people's daily life

🏦News - The South Korean government plans to invest 710.2 billion won ($526.9 million) into initiatives aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into various aspects of people's daily lives—enhancing  the overall quality of their life.

As per the announcement from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the AI Strategy High-Level Consultative Council, a joint government and civilian panel responsible for shaping AI policies, approved the plan to invest in 69 AI projects. These projects are aimed at ensuring that people across all sectors can experience the benefits of AI.

📒What types of initiatives does the plan cover?

• 75.5 billion won is allocated for 18 programs focusing on improving daily life.

• 288.1 billion won is designated for 24 workplace-related projects.

• 115.7 billion won is earmarked for 14 public administration initiatives.

• An additional 230.9 billion won is set aside for AI education and ethics programs.

👷‍♂️What kind of projects are in the pipeline?

• The projects involve developing AI-powered software tailored for diagnosing and managing nine rare pediatric diseases, as well as assisting in diagnosing 12 serious medical conditions.

• They also involve creating AI-based digital medical devices for early prediction and management of individuals on the autism spectrum.

• Plans further include leveraging AI in public services, such as distributing information and communication aids for individuals with disabilities, providing healthcare services for vulnerable populations like elderly individuals living alone, and assisting households in welfare blind spots.

• Furthermore, the government aims to deploy AI across diverse industries by developing specialized AI services tailored for sectors such as law, medicine, and psychological counseling.

• And, in the public sector, AI technologies will be used to improve disaster response capabilities for scenarios like fires, floods, and infectious disease outbreaks.

Stability AI unveils Stable Audio 2.0 with extended outputs and audio-to-audio capabilities 

🥁News - Stability AI has introduced an upgraded version of its text-to-music AI tool called Stable Audio 2.0, which now allows users to create AI-generated sound clips of up to three minutes, a significant improvement from the previous version, which was capped at 90 seconds. 

2.0 includes a free tier, while also offering premium subscriptions that grant users access to creator licenses and increased monthly limits for generating tracks.

🔊What's new with Stable Audio 2.0?

• Users can now generate high-quality, full tracks with a coherent musical structure for up to three minutes in length at 44.1 kHz stereo using text prompts.

• Alongside text-to-audio functionality, Stability Audio 2.0 incorporates audio-to-audio capabilities, enabling users to transform uploaded audio samples through natural language prompts.

• Stability AI has also expanded Stable Audio's sound-effect generation, providing artists and musicians with increased flexibility and control.

👨‍🎤What's more? Stability AI states that Stable Audio 2.0 was solely trained on a licensed dataset obtained from the AudioSparx music library. The company assures that it honors opt-out requests from musicians and artists, ensuring fair compensation for creators.
