OpenAI considers allowing users to ‘responsibly’ generate AI NSFW content

🤯News - OpenAI is exploring the possibility of allowing developers and users to responsibly create AI-generated explicit content using its products. This could include erotica, extreme gore, slurs, and unsolicited profanity. 

The proposal was revealed in an OpenAI document discussing the development of its AI tools. It said: “We’re exploring whether we can responsibly provide the ability to generate not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content in age-appropriate contexts.”

🫠Why though? Joanne Jang, an employee who worked on the document, explained that OpenAI simply wants to start a discussion about whether it should always prohibit the creation of erotic text and nude images using its products. She highlighted that there are instances where such content is important to users but reiterated that this would be explored within an “age-appropriate context”.

Jang further clarified that OpenAI is not attempting to create AI porn but acknowledged that whether the output is considered pornography depends on individual definitions, adding, “These are the exact conversations we want to have.”

She also emphasized that, in any case, deepfakes would not be permitted, stating, “We want to ensure that people have maximum control to the extent that it doesn’t violate the law or other people’s rights, but enabling deepfakes is out of the question, period.”

New AI feature from X sparks debate among its users

😬News - The business account of social media platform X has announced a new AI-powered feature that has sparked debate among its users. 

This feature, called “AI Audience,” will enable advertisers to provide a brief description of their target audience for a given ad. X’s AI systems will then quickly generate a pool of the most relevant X users for that target audience.

For instance, if a user inputs the target audience as “Technology Leaders” with the description “users who are leaders in technology,” the AI will quickly generate a list with hundreds of users fitting this criteria, along with demographic statistics.

Seems fairly simple, right? But then why this has sparked a debate🤔

If the AI proves effective over time in accurately identifying target audiences, this move could give X an advantage over other platforms in advertising, as other platforms would still require manual research for targeting the right audiences.

However, some users are worried about the AI reinforcing biases and stereotypes. One user questioned what exactly X is selling and to whom, stating, “I thought I am the one paying so X doesn't have to have to pimp me to brands and sell me to corporations.”

On the flip side, though, many users are excited about and consider the development “really smart.”

Virtual Einstein teaches game theory in Hong Kong University’s AI lecturer trial

🥽News - At the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), students are participating in a course that explores the use of “AI lecturers.” Using virtual reality headsets, they traveled to a pavilion above the clouds, where an AI-generated Albert Einstein explained game theory. 

🤖Does this mean AI lecturers will soon replace their human counterparts? Well, not really. According to Professor Pan Hui, who is leading this AI project at HKUST, this system works alongside in-person teaching, taking care of the “more tedious” parts of a lecturer’s job.

Hui isn’t worried about being replaced by the technology; in fact, he believes it can help alleviate the global teacher shortage. “AI teachers can add diversity, bring an interesting aspect, and even provide immersive storytelling,” Hui said.

Furthermore, he added that, for now, despite impressing students, the technology is far from being able to seriously threaten human teachers due to its limitations—it can’t interact with students or answer questions, and like all AI-powered systems, it may sometimes provide false or even bizarre answers.
