US regulator investigates OpenAI for possible privacy violation

📰News - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. The FTC is looking into whether OpenAI collected public data and generated false information through ChatGPT, which could violate consumer protection laws.

The regulatory body has sent OpenAI a 20-page letter requesting information about its artificial intelligence technology, products, customers, privacy safeguards, and data security arrangements.

The FTC is also investigating whether OpenAI has engaged in any unfair or deceptive privacy or data security practices that could harm consumers.

🤔What did Sam Altman say in response to this?

  • OpenAI founder Sam Altman expressed disappointment that the FTC investigation was disclosed to the public, saying that it would not help build trust. However, he added that the company would cooperate with the FTC.

  • In particular, he stated, “It’s super important to us that our technology is safe and pro-consumer, and we are confident we follow the law, we protect user privacy and design our systems to learn about the world, not private individuals.”

Hollywood actors join screenwriters in protest of AI threat

📻News - A Hollywood actors' union has announced that it will launch a joint strike with screenwriters, demanding job protections against Artificial Intelligence. The strike was set to begin at midnight on Thursday, following a breakdown in negotiations with the studios.

The strike is the first time in 60 years that actors and screenwriters have joined forces to demand job protection from the studios. They are concerned that AI will eventually replace them in their jobs, and they are also demanding an increase in base pay and residuals from streaming services.

🤢Can AI replace actors though?

  • AI can be a threat to actors to some extent. Note that AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated and capable of performing tasks that were once thought to be the exclusive domain of humans.

  • This raises the possibility that AI could eventually replace actors in some roles. For example, AI could be used to create realistic-looking background actors or to generate voice-overs for animated films. It is also possible that AI could be used to create entirely new forms of entertainment that do not rely on human actors at all.

House approves bill for AI training of Federal workers

☕News - The House of Representatives has passed a bill that would require federal officials who work with artificial intelligence systems to undergo training on how to use and understand these systems.

Rep. Nancy Mace’s AI Training Expansion Act was co-sponsored by Gerry Connolly. It would apply to supervisors, managers, and data and technology workers whose jobs are linked to the federal government's use of AI.

The bill also updates the training guidelines that were established by the AI Training Act, which was passed by Congress last year and signed into law by the president in October.

🎃What does the bill aim at? AI is already being used by the federal government in a variety of ways, such as fraud detection, healthcare, and national security. The bill is intended to ensure that federal officials are equipped to use artificial intelligence effectively and responsibly as it continues to develop.

Sen. Gary Peters, also introduced a similar piece of legislation in the Senate earlier this year.
