👨🏻💻News - OpenAI might be getting ready to launch a new “AI agent” tool as early as January. Code-named “Operator,” this tool would be able to take direct actions on someone’s computer, with early access expected through OpenAI’s developer API as a research preview.
Operator would join a growing list of similar AI tools, like Anthropic’s new Computer Use feature and Google’s rumored consumer AI agent. While details are still under wraps, Operator is expected to be a versatile tool for performing tasks in a web browser, giving users an all-in-one digital assistant.
☕What's more? In separate news, OpenAI has released a policy paper outlining suggestions for the U.S. AI strategy. The paper proposes that the federal government create AI-focused “economic zones” that would allow for the development of AI infrastructure and the establishment of a bloc with U.S. allies to compete with China on AI.

First, they’re asking for feedback on how the law defines AI systems.
They're asking stakeholders from the AI industry, business, academia, and civil society to provide feedback on the clarity of the definition and identify software that should be excluded.
The second point focuses on the banned uses of AI, specifically cases deemed to present “unacceptable risk,” such as social scoring systems similar to those in China.
The consultation places a significant emphasis on obtaining detailed feedback and practical examples regarding each prohibited use.
🔜Looking ahead - The consultation will be open until December 11, 2024. After that, the European Commission expects to release guidance on defining AI systems and banned uses sometime in early 2025.
