šŸ¤–OpenAI Readies AI ā€œOperatorā€

PLUS: EU seeks public input on AI compliance

Reading time: 5 minutes

Key Points

  • OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI agent that can perform tasks on users' computers.

  • The tool will compete with similar offerings from Anthropic and Google, likely focusing on web browser tasks.

šŸ‘ØšŸ»ā€šŸ’»News - OpenAI might be getting ready to launch a new ā€œAI agentā€ tool as early as January. Code-named ā€œOperator,ā€ this tool would be able to take direct actions on someoneā€™s computer, with early access expected through OpenAIā€™s developer API as a research preview.

Operator would join a growing list of similar AI tools, like Anthropicā€™s new Computer Use feature and Googleā€™s rumored consumer AI agent. While details are still under wraps, Operator is expected to be a versatile tool for performing tasks in a web browser, giving users an all-in-one digital assistant.

ā˜•What's more? In separate news, OpenAI has released a policy paper outlining suggestions for the U.S. AI strategy. The paper proposes that the federal government create AI-focused ā€œeconomic zonesā€ that would allow for the development of AI infrastructure and the establishment of a bloc with U.S. allies to compete with China on AI.

Key Points

  • The EU is asking for input on two key areas: defining AI systems and gathering feedback on banned uses of AI.

  • Feedback from the consultation will inform the European Commissionā€™s guidance, expected to be released in early 2025.

šŸ¤News - The European Union is working on developing compliance guidance for its AI law and has launched a consultation to get input on two key points.

  • First, theyā€™re asking for feedback on how the law defines AI systems.

They're asking stakeholders from the AI industry, business, academia, and civil society to provide feedback on the clarity of the definition and identify software that should be excluded.

  • The second point focuses on the banned uses of AI, specifically cases deemed to present ā€œunacceptable risk,ā€ such as social scoring systems similar to those in China.

The consultation places a significant emphasis on obtaining detailed feedback and practical examples regarding each prohibited use.

šŸ”œLooking ahead - The consultation will be open until December 11, 2024. After that, the European Commission expects to release guidance on defining AI systems and banned uses sometime in early 2025.
