Key Points

  • OpenAI and Microsoft are renegotiating equity and access terms to support future IPO and tech development.

  • Microsoft may trade equity for post-2030 access to OpenAI’s newest AI models and innovations.

  • Despite rising tensions, both companies remain committed to finalizing a deal that secures mutual long-term value.

♨️News - OpenAI and Microsoft are renegotiating the terms of their multibillion-dollar partnership as OpenAI looks to restructure and eventually go public. The goal is to give the company more flexibility while ensuring Microsoft maintains access to future AI breakthroughs.

A major point of discussion is how much equity Microsoft will hold in the restructured group. So far, Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion into OpenAI, and it wants to make sure that investment continues to pay off. The two companies are also reviewing the original contract from 2019, which outlines Microsoft’s access to OpenAI’s models, intellectual property, and product revenue. That deal runs until 2030.

People familiar with the talks say Microsoft may give up some of its equity in return for access to OpenAI’s technology beyond that 2030 cutoff.

🧐What’s more? While Microsoft remains OpenAI’s biggest backer, the relationship has become more complex. OpenAI has started building its own infrastructure and courting other partners like Oracle and SoftBank. Some at Microsoft feel the startup is asking for support without offering real collaboration.

Still, both sides are optimistic. A person close to OpenAI said the negotiations are tough but moving forward, and that the goal of restructuring to allow for an IPO is still very much on the table.

Key Points

  • Google I/O will likely unveil an upgraded Gemini Ultra model with new features and a higher subscription price.

  • Expect updates on Google’s AI apps, including Astra for real-time, multimodal understanding and Project Mariner for AI agents.

  • Leaked code suggests potential upgrades to NotebookLM and a new “Video Overviews” tool powered by Veo 2.

👨‍💻News - Google’s biggest developer conference, I/O, is just around the corner, running from May 20 to 21. And no points for guessing that this year, AI is set to take center stage, with several exciting updates on the way.

🕵️‍♂️Here’s what to expect - One of the major highlights will likely be the introduction of an updated Gemini Ultra model. This premium addition to Google’s Gemini AI family has been the subject of recent leaks, and it’s expected to push the boundaries of what the platform can do. Along with the upgraded model, Google may also introduce a new, higher-priced Gemini subscription.

Expect Google to also dive into Astra, its ambitious effort to create AI applications and agents that support real-time, multimodal understanding. Project Mariner, a similar initiative involving AI agents that navigate and take action across the web, may also make an appearance. References to “Computer Use” in Google’s AI Studio platform code suggest Mariner could be ready for prime time.

I/O will also likely feature updates on Google Cloud, Chrome, Android development tools, and Gemma, Google’s collection of open AI models. And, as in previous years, there could be surprises; leaked code hints at an upgrade to NotebookLM and a potential “Video Overviews” tool that might leverage Google’s Veo 2 model for creating video summaries.
