OpenAI cut off one of the most popular coding tools in the world on Saturday. Two of the largest music companies on earth came for Anthropic's founders by name. And a federal judge told the Pentagon it broke the law.

WHAT HAPPENED
OpenAI is ending Cursor's access to its models on November 12, after SpaceX acquired the coding tool. OpenAI said it cannot be confident SpaceX will honour its terms of service, citing experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts and Musk's own admission that xAI trained on OpenAI output. Cursor co-founder Michael Truell said OpenAI currently serves about 5% of the tool's users and that his team is still talking to OpenAI. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown answered within hours, promising more compute for Claude inside Cursor.
WHY IT MATTERS
Model access has been treated as a utility, something you buy like electricity and never think about again. This is the first time a frontier lab has cut off a major product over who owns it rather than what it does. Every company building on someone else's model now has a new risk on the board, and it is not technical or commercial; it is who your investors are. The moat was never the model. It was the contract.
OUR TAKE
OpenAI just taught its own customers the lesson it least wanted taught, that depending on a single lab is a governance risk. Truell's 5% figure is the tell here. Cursor will be fine, and that is worse for OpenAI than if it would not be.
Watch the enterprise deals. If procurement teams start demanding multi-model clauses this quarter, Saturday cost OpenAI more than it cost Musk.

The complaint names Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann personally, not just the company, and accuses them of a brazen campaign of illegally torrenting and scraping copyrighted work to train Claude. It lands in the same California court where Anthropic already paid $1.5 billion to settle a nearly identical claim from authors. Anthropic says it disagrees with the publishers and will defend itself robustly.

Judge Rita Lin voided that punishment on Thursday night, calling it illegal and baseless, and writing that the government wanted to make a public example of Anthropic for its arrogance in criticizing the administration. The designation had labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk since February, after Dario Amodei refused unrestricted military deployment over mass surveillance and autonomous weapons concerns.
