Ukraine plans trials of AI-enhanced caesar artillery system in 2024
📰News - The Ukrainian military is seeking to acquire more Caesar self-propelled howitzers (a type of artillery piece) equipped with artificial intelligence to improve targeting and firing accuracy. This was announced by Ivan Gavrylyuk, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, during a meeting with a delegation from the French Senate.
🤔How would AI help the self-propelled artillery? The AI upgrade is expected to significantly enhance Caesar's targeting and firing mechanisms, leading to greater precision. This, in turn, will reduce ammunition consumption by up to 30%, according to Gavrylyuk. He emphasized the importance of this improvement, urging the French delegation to provide more ammunition for the Nexter 155mm howitzer.
AI-powered Caesar uses AI algorithms to analyze data from sensors like radars and cameras to automatically identify and track targets. This allows for faster targeting, especially for moving targets, and reduces the risk of human error. Further, it can constantly adjust firing parameters based on real-time data, including wind speed, air pressure, and target movement.
🤖What about testing and acquisition plans? Fire management trials for the AI-powered Caesar are scheduled for 2024. Ukraine has already received 18 Caesars from France since the war began in 2022, with an additional 12 promised. The truck-mounted system is a formidable weapon, capable of firing six rounds per minute at a distance of up to 40 kilometers.
Indonesia’s AI guideline faces harsh criticism, analysts call it ineffective
📻News - Indonesia's recent attempt to regulate artificial intelligence has sparked debate among AI experts. The guidelines, outlined in Communications and Information Ministry Circular No. 9/2023, have been met with both criticism and cautious optimism.
Critics claim the regulations lack bite, as they are non-binding and rely on existing laws like the Personal Data Protection Act. They argue these existing laws are insufficient to address the unique challenges posed by AI, potentially leaving the door open for misuse and abuse.
🤔What about positive criticism? Others view the circular as a positive step towards a more comprehensive legal framework. They acknowledge the limitations of a non-binding document but see it as a crucial first step in establishing ethical principles and best practices for AI development in Indonesia.
🤠What’s the content of the guideline though? The guidelines address concerns about transparency, accountability, and social impact. It urges developers to ensure AI-generated information is reliable and to avoid biases that could lead to discrimination or harm. It also emphasizes the need to protect personal data and considers the potential economic and social consequences of AI technology.
These concerns echo the warnings raised by the United Nations High-Level Advisory Body on AI in its recent report, "Governing AI for Humanity." The report highlights the dangers of inaccurate or manipulative AI, job displacement, and the weaponization of AI in warfare.
NVIDIA H100 AI GPUs inside data centers use as much electricity as Guatemala
😎News - The future of AI is hungry, and its fuel of choice is electricity. NVIDIA, the king of AI computing, is selling millions of its H100 GPUs. By next year, these 3.5 million AI chips will gulp down a staggering 13,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity - that's more than Guatemala and Lithuania combined.
NVIDIA's H100 is just the tip of the iceberg. They've got a new H200 on the way, and then the even mightier B100 is slated for 2024. This B100 promises to be both brainy and eco-friendly, sipping its power more responsibly. But until then, electricity usage remains a major concern.
🤔What’s more? As per the researchers, current AI technology could be on track to annually consume as much electricity as the entire country of Ireland (29.3 terawatt-hours per year).
Interestingly, if generative AI is used in every Google search, the daily electricity consumption would amount to 80 GWh. In 2021, Google’s annual electricity use was 18.3 TWh, with 10-15% coming from AI.
As the demand for artificial intelligence capabilities continues to rise, balancing technological advancement with sustainability becomes an imperative consideration for both NVIDIA and the industry at large.
