Nvidia slashes AI chip prices in China amid competition with Huawei

☕News - Nvidia's AI chip for China has been struggling, with an oversupply causing it to be priced lower than a similar chip from Huawei, sources say. 

This situation underscores Nvidia's challenges in China amid U.S. sanctions and increasing competition, impacting a market that contributed 17% to its revenue in fiscal 2024.

🗃️For context - Nvidia launched three chips for China last year after U.S. sanctions restricted the export of its most advanced semiconductors. Among these, the H20 chip is the most powerful Nvidia product available in China, but three supply chain sources indicated that there is an oversupply and weak demand. 

This has led to H20 chips being sold at over a 10% discount compared to Huawei's Ascend 910B. Furthermore, over the past six months, only five state or state-affiliated buyers have shown interest in the H20, while more than a dozen have shown interest in Huawei's 910B, based on available government procurement data.

💁🏻‍♂️In conclusion - According to analysts, while Nvidia is making significant efforts to retain market share in the Chinese market, the future appears increasingly uncertain.

The mounting competitive pressure in China also serves as a warning for investors in the US semiconductor company, especially as its shares continue to soar following an impressive revenue forecast earlier this week.

AI can help detect Parkinson's disease in advance, scientists say

👁️News - A new study suggests that eye scans powered by artificial intelligence could detect Parkinson's disease years before symptoms appear.

The study was conducted by researchers from London's Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

👨🏻‍🔬What was the research process like? The researchers used AI to analyze data from a 3D scan of the retina. They found that people with Parkinson's had a thinner ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer and inner nuclear layer in the eye than people without the condition. These layers are important for vision, and their thinning may be a sign of early Parkinson's disease.

The researchers also found that the AI was able to detect these changes seven years, on average, before the people developed symptoms.

👨🏻‍⚕️What’s the conclusion then? This suggests that eye scans could be used as a pre-screening tool for Parkinson's disease. If people could be identified as being at risk of developing the disease early, they could be offered treatment to slow the progression of the disease and improve their quality of life. The study is still in its early stages, but it is a promising development.
