👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

U.S. chipmaker NVIDIA to prioritize Japan for the delivery of its AI processors

📻News - Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a bold commitment this week: amidst sky-high demand for their AI processors, the U.S. tech giant has revealed that it will prioritize Japan's needs.

The country's motivation is clear. Having witnessed the ever-growing power of AI, Japan doesn't want to be left holding an outdated abacus. They've allocated a whopping 2 trillion yen ($13.6 billion) to reignite their semiconductor industry, a war chest aimed at luring chip giants like TSMC and nurturing homegrown ventures like Rapidus.

👨‍💼What more did Jensen say? The CEO stated that countries like Japan are realizing that "you need to own your own data, build your own AI factories, and produce your own AI intelligence."

Huang showed optimism about Japan’s evolving semiconductor industry. He asserted that the semiconductor industry that Japan is now starting to grow and foster will be able to produce GPUs.

On a side note, Nvidia’s business is growing because of the surge in demand for high-powered graphics processing units (GPUs) that are needed to train AI models. Consequently, its revenue in the fiscal third quarter has tripled, while net income has climbed to $9.24 billion from $680 million a year earlier.

Singapore to triple the AI talent pool; build 'iconic' AI site as part of updated national strategy

😵News - Singapore, on Monday, updated its National AI Strategy (NAIS) 2.0. Under this new plan, Singapore, over the next five years, aims to more than triple the number of artificial intelligence practitioners and establish an “iconic” site to nurture the country’s AI community.

The talent push starts with a revamp of the AI Apprenticeship Programme, where 300 Singaporeans have already honed their skills. The govt. is scaling it up, with industry partnerships to expand company attachments and on-the-job learning. The country is also launching targeted AI training programs to upskill the existing workforce, aligned with industry transformation maps.

🧐Will global talent also count? Recognizing the power of collaboration, the govt. is not stopping at local talent. A dedicated team will actively scout and attract world-class AI creators, anchoring them in Singapore's ecosystem. This cross-pollination of minds and expertise is key to fostering innovation, believes the government.

"We are entering uncharted territory," said Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the NAIS 2.0 launch, acknowledging the potential and pitfalls of AI. But for Singapore, one thing is clear: they're not just navigating this uncharted territory, they're aiming to be the ones drawing the map.

Only a small fraction of German companies are adequately prepared for the AI era

🥴News - The AI Readiness Index by Cisco (a technology company) has revealed that only 7% of German companies are adequately prepared for the AI era, far below the global average of 14%. This indicates that Germany's AI adoption rate is significantly lower than that of other developed nations, such as the United States (18%) and China (9%).

Germany has good AI plans and skilled people, but not many of its homegrown companies are using AI widely and effectively. Instead, they are more focused on improving productivity and customer service, not creating new revenue sources or improving employee skills with AI.

🤓What’s more? As per the study, to catch up with other countries, Germany needs to speed up its AI adoption and use AI to create new business opportunities, improve employee skills, and make its operations more efficient and customer-friendly.

The study further highlights the importance of addressing the cultural and organizational barriers that hinder AI adoption in Germany. Experts suggest, that by fostering a more receptive environment towards AI investment and education, German companies can move away from being AI followers to becoming AI leaders.

🌟Mythbuster

Myth - AI can surpass human intelligence in all areas

Fact - While AI has achieved superhuman performance in tasks like image recognition, language translation, and game playing, it still struggles with many aspects of general intelligence. While AI rocks at specific tasks, areas like common sense and reasoning leave it scratching its circuits. Imagine explaining a joke or navigating a sticky social situation – AI would be lost in the wilderness of human intuition and observation.
