UK government urged to rethink strategy to seize AI goldrush

☕News - On 2 February, the UK House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee published a report, suggesting that the government's approach to AI is overly focused on safety, which might result in missing out on opportunities related to the technology. 

🥸The committee's insights and recommendations:

• The committee warned the government that if they don't promote fair competition and openness, a few big tech companies could quickly gain control over the market, potentially hindering new players. 

• The report advocated for essential measures such as increased support for AI start-ups, enhancing computing infrastructure, and looking into the possibility of creating a UK-based large language model (LLM).

• In considering the risks around LLMs, the committee stated that the "apocalyptic concerns" about threats to human existence are "exaggerated" and shouldn't sidetrack policymakers. 

• The committee instead urged focus on the more immediate security risks, including cyber attacks, child sexual exploitation material, terrorist content, and disinformation. 

• They also called for mandatory safety tests for high-risk AI models and a greater emphasis on safety by design.

Meta enters AI chip race, plans custom chip to boost initiatives

👨🏻‍💻Context of the news - The boom in Generative AI has increased the need for advanced AI chips used for training and running AI models. Nvidia currently dominates this market with its popular but limited chips, making them pricey. As a result, major companies like Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Amazon, and Google are considering the development of their own AI chips, aiming to be less dependent on Nvidia and grab a share of the market.

👨🏻‍🏭News - Meta plans to develop its own custom chips this year to support its AI initiatives.

The new chip, dubbed "Artemis," will focus solely on the inference process. What this means is, it will specifically engage in the process where models use algorithms to make ranking judgments and respond to user prompts.

😀What's more?  In recent months, Amazon announced the latest version of its Trainium chip, Microsoft revealed plans of launching its AI-focused Maia 100 chip in 2024, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman started raising funds for chip development. Meanwhile, Nvidia and fellow chipmakers like AMD and Intel have been racing to release better and more powerful AI chips.

The clear takeaway from these developments is that as the demand for generative AI services continues to grow, chips are poised to become the next significant battleground for AI supremacy.

Google introduces image generation in Bard, upgrades music generation tool, brings GenAI to Maps 

🤖News - Google has upgraded its chatbot Bard with AI image generation, putting it in direct competition with rivals such as ChatGPT Plus.

Users can now prompt Bard to generate images through Google's Imagen 2 text-to-image model. However, there are a few things to consider; 

• While Bard's service is free, allowing creative exploration for a wider audience, its AI image generation is currently limited to simple photos, with improvements expected over time.

• Furthermore, despite now being powered by Google's Gemini Pro large language model globally with support for over 40 languages, Bard's image generation feature will be limited to English for the time being.

🤠What else is new? In related news, Google announced an upgrade to its music-generating tool, MusicLM. The latest version, named MusicFX, can create short melodies up to 70 seconds in length and music loops, promising higher-quality and faster music generation. 

Additionally, the tech giant is rolling out a generative AI feature in Maps, aiming to assist users in discovering new places. The feature will analyze data from over 250 million Maps locations and input from 300 million Local Guides. It will provide personalized suggestions in a conversational manner and respond to follow-up questions, offering relevant suggestions based on your previous interests.
