Key Points

  • Recogni's new Pareto system simplifies AI computations by converting multiplication into addition, cutting power use and costs.

  • The company is collaborating with an unnamed partner to expand Pareto’s availability.

☕News - Recogni, an AI chip and software startup, announced a new computing method on Tuesday that could make its AI chips more compact, faster, and cheaper to run.

The company, backed by BMW, Bosch, and venture capital firm Mayfield, specializes in developing chips and software for AI inferencing, which involves using trained AI models to make predictions or decisions on new data.

👨🏻‍💻How does their new computing method work? Recogni's patented system, called Pareto, uses a logarithmic approach that outperforms current methods for running large AI models. While AI models like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google's Gemini require vast amounts of power for numerous mathematical operations, Recogni's Pareto system simplifies these by converting multiplication operations into additions. This change significantly reduces power usage while preserving accuracy.

The company is working with an unnamed entity to expand the reach of Pareto, with plans to announce the partnership in the coming months.

Key Points

  • California will invest $250 million in journalism and AI research, with contributions from tech companies, starting in 2025.

  • The initiative has support from Alphabet, OpenAI, and the California News Publishers Association.

🏦News - California will be the first state to use taxpayer funds and tech company contributions to support journalism and AI research, following a major agreement announced on Wednesday.

Over the next five years, the state and tech firms will jointly invest about $250 million to boost California-based news organizations and fund an AI research program.

The initiative will start in 2025 with an initial investment of $100 million, primarily allocated to news organizations.

💼Why this matters - The deal seeks to provide essential financial aid to struggling local journalism and promote AI research that could significantly impact the industry.

The agreement has been supported by major entities such as the California News Publishers Association, which represents over 700 news organizations, along with Alphabet, Google's parent company, and OpenAI.
