NATO to update its artificial intelligence strategy in the wake of new threats
📰News - NATO is set to update its artificial intelligence strategy to incorporate generative AI. This move has been prompted by the growing threat of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.
NATO aims to standardize processes to ensure that generative AI and other new technology can be utilized effectively and safely, according to David van Wheel, NATO’s assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges.
😎What new process is NATO adopting? The North Atlantic Alliance will review the 2021 AI strategy next year, and a new version will be adopted that will mainly focus on rules around Generative AI.
NATO's initial AI strategy laid out six principles for responsible AI use, the organization has been working on more concrete measures to put these principles into practice.
To solidify its 2021 AI strategy, NATO has been actively developing an "AI intelligence certification standard" since February 2023. This standard aims to translate the high-level principles outlined in the original strategy into tangible and practical guidelines.
These guidelines will serve as "checks and balances" to ensure ethical and responsible AI development and deployment within the alliance.
China urges nations to prioritize responsible AI development for military applications
🗞️News - China's Defense Ministry urged international cooperation, on Thursday, in regulating the military application of artificial intelligence, highlighting the need for a "prudent and responsible" approach to this rapidly developing technology.
Senior Colonel Wu Qian, the ministry's spokesman, emphasized China's commitment to ethical AI development at a news conference, pointing to its Global Initiative for AI Governance as a platform for international collaboration. He also talked about China's active participation in global discussions, including submitting position papers to the United Nations on regulating military AI and advocating for strong moral governance.
🤔What’s more? Wu further expressed concerns about the potential security risks associated with AI-powered weapon systems, urging all nations, particularly major powers, to exercise caution and responsibility in their research, development, and deployment.
By advocating for responsible AI development and international cooperation, China is aiming to play a leading role in shaping the future of AI in the military domain. Whether other nations will follow suit and engage in constructive dialogue remains to be seen.
Microsoft president reveals super-intelligent AI is decades away
📻News - Microsoft's president, on Thursday, dismissed the near-term threat of super-intelligent AI and stated that the technology could be decades away.
The recent chaos at OpenAI gave way to the speculation that Sam Altman was almost close to discovering Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or super-intelligence. Some tech figures, such as Elon Musk, speculated that Altman's firing and subsequent re-appointment stemmed from a disagreement over AI safety.
🧐So what's Microsoft been up to lately? In conjunction with the OpenAI case, Microsoft has planned to invest 2.5 billion pounds into Britain over the next three years. This will be its single largest investment in the country to date. Experts believe that Microsoft's move will give way to future growth in artificial intelligence.
The funding will double Microsoft's datacentre footprint in Britain. Thus, providing the infrastructure crucial for new AI models to work.
Well, Microsoft's decision to invest $3.2 billion in the UK seems surprising given the April 2023 comments by its president Brad Smith. At the time, Smith expressed strong criticism towards the UK's antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The CMA had ruled against Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, raising concerns about the tech industry's confidence in the UK business environment.
