Key Points
Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI expands, naming new defendants including Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, and Dee Templeton.
The amended complaint accuses OpenAI of anti-competitive behavior, claiming it harms Musk’s company, xAI, and other rivals.
Musk alleges OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit mission was a betrayal, claiming he was defrauded of over $44 million.
📓Context of the news - Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of abandoning its nonprofit mission, was withdrawn in July but revived in August. The case now includes new defendants and plaintiffs, expanding the scope of the legal dispute.
☕News - The amended complaint now names Microsoft, Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn co-founder), and Dee Templeton (former OpenAI board member) as defendants. Musk’s AI company, xAI, and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis are added as plaintiffs. The suit now alleges anti-competitive behavior and conflicts of interest.
🕵🏻♂️What's new? Musk’s lawyers argue that OpenAI and Microsoft’s relationship has harmed competitors like xAI. They claim OpenAI has pressured investors not to fund competing companies and is using Microsoft’s infrastructure and expertise in ways that constitute a “de facto merger.”
The complaint further alleges that Hoffman’s positions on the boards of Microsoft and OpenAI, along with his role as a partner at Greylock, gave him an illicit advantage by providing privileged access to confidential information, with Greylock’s investment in Inflection—an AI startup seen as a competitor to OpenAI—highlighted as a conflict of interest. Templeton’s brief position at OpenAI is said to have facilitated agreements violating antitrust laws.
Additionally, Zilis, a former OpenAI board member, is cited for raising concerns internally about OpenAI’s corporate dealings, which Musk’s team argues were ignored.
😲What's more? The amended filing also reveals that Sam Altman proposed the idea of selling cryptocurrency in 2018, an initiative Musk opposed. This suggestion came before OpenAI shifted to its capped-profit structure.
The core of the lawsuit remains that OpenAI profited from Musk’s early contributions but abandoned its nonprofit mission to share AI research for the public good. Musk claims he was defrauded of over $44 million in donations, accusing OpenAI of exploiting his concerns about AI’s risks, and alleges Altman engaged in self-dealing for personal gain through OpenAI’s ties with other companies.
Key Points
ChatGPT now integrates with coding apps like VS Code, Xcode, and Terminal on macOS.
Developers no longer need to copy-paste code, as ChatGPT automatically reads the code in active apps.
The feature, called Work with Apps, is a step toward AI systems that understand and interact with your computer.
👨🏻💻News – OpenAI’s ChatGPT is starting to work with other apps on your computer.
OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT desktop app for macOS now supports integration with several developer-focused coding apps, including VS Code, Xcode, TextEdit, Terminal, and iTerm2.
🖥️What does this mean? The update allows ChatGPT to read code directly within these apps, eliminating the need for developers to copy and paste their code into the chatbot. This means developers can now seamlessly integrate ChatGPT into their workflow.
When enabled, the chatbot will automatically access the code section being worked on and use it as context for prompts. However, ChatGPT cannot yet write code directly into these developer tools, unlike AI tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
🤓In conclusion – The new feature, called Work with Apps, marks a significant step toward OpenAI’s goal of creating more interactive AI systems. While it’s not yet an AI agent, OpenAI views this as a crucial step in building systems that can understand and interact with a user’s entire computer environment.
This feature is currently available to Plus and Teams users, with plans to expand to Enterprise and Edu users soon. OpenAI aims to extend this functionality to other text-based apps in the future.
