āNews ā NASA and IBM have unveiled Surya, an AI foundation model built to unlock the mysteries of the sun. Trained on years of solar data, it can model solar activity, predict solar flares more accurately, and offer earlier warnings that could help protect astronauts, satellites, and critical infrastructure on Earth.
šØāš»Fast facts ā
Surya was trained on nine years of images from NASAās Solar Dynamics Observatory.
The model creates a digital twin of the sun that updates in real time.
It uses advanced AI architecture to process massive high-resolution datasets.
Early tests showed a 16 percent improvement in flare prediction accuracy.
Surya can give up to two hours of advance warning compared to one hour in traditional models.
š¤OpenTools POV ā Surya is more than a step forward in space science. It is an example of how foundation models can handle vast, complex datasets and deliver insights that reshape both research and real-world safety.
