Elon Musk’s xAI launches Grok 3

🔥News - Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has rolled out its latest AI model, Grok 3, along with updates to the Grok iOS and web apps. Musk described Grok 3 as “an order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2” and called it a “maximally truth-seeking AI.” 

The model was trained using a massive data center in Memphis, equipped with around 200,000 GPUs. Musk said Grok 3 used “10x” more computing power than its predecessor and was trained on an expanded dataset that includes court filings and more.

🌟Features & performance - Grok 3 isn’t just one model—it’s a family of AI models. A smaller variant, Grok 3 mini, trades some accuracy for faster responses. 

Two other models, Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, are designed to analyze problems more methodically, similar to models from OpenAI and DeepSeek. These reasoning models can be accessed via the Grok app. Users can ask Grok 3 to “Think,” or—for more difficult queries—use “Big Brain” mode for enhanced reasoning with additional computing power. xAI describes these models as best suited for mathematics, science, and programming questions.

These reasoning models also power a new feature in the Grok app called DeepSearch. Like OpenAI’s deep research tools, DeepSearch scans the internet and X (formerly Twitter) to summarize relevant information for users.

According to xAI, Grok 3 outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4o on several benchmarks, including AIME (math-focused evaluations) and GPQA (which tests PhD-level knowledge in physics, biology, and chemistry). Early versions of Grok 3 also performed well in Chatbot Arena, where AI models are ranked by user votes.

👨‍💻Industry reactions - Following the Grok 3 launch, industry experts and early testers shared their experiences with the model. Here’s what they said:

📲How to get it? Access to Grok 3 starts with X’s Premium+ subscription at $50 per month. Additional features, including enhanced reasoning and DeepSearch, will be available through a new SuperGrok plan, rumored to cost $30 per month or $300 annually. This plan will also unlock unlimited image generation.

⏭️Future plans - xAI has more updates on the way. Within the next week, Grok will get a “voice mode” that enables synthesized speech. In the coming weeks, xAI plans to integrate Grok 3 models and DeepSearch into its enterprise API.

Musk also confirmed that Grok 2 will be open-sourced once Grok 3 is stable. “When Grok 3 is mature and stable, which is probably within a few months, then we’ll open-source Grok 2,” he said.

🎮And a new direction - At the Grok 3 launch event, Musk announced that xAI is launching an AI-powered game development studio. He invited developers to join the company in creating AI-driven gaming experiences. This announcement comes after Musk’s recent discussion with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis on AI-generated playable 3D environments.
