👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom

AI adoption surges in June as top companies try to stay ahead of the competition

🤶News - Companies reporting second-quarter earnings in recent weeks have talked up artificial intelligence even more than in the previous quarter.

In the second quarter, more S&P 500 companies mentioned AI on earnings calls than in the first quarter. These companies are investing heavily in AI in order to stay ahead of the competition and improve their bottom line.

🕵️‍♂️How many times did the companies use the word AI?

Intel, Alphabet, and Microsoft were among the companies that mentioned AI more frequently on their recent earnings calls. Intel, which has missed out on the boom in components for AI computing, mentioned AI 58 times on its call, up from 15 mentions in its previous call in April.

Alphabet mentioned AI 62 times on its call, up from 52 times three months ago. And Microsoft mentioned AI 58 times on its call, up from 35 times in its previous call.

👨‍🎓What does this imply? The huge mention of AI reflects the growing importance of the technology for businesses of all sizes.

As AI adoption continues to grow, it is likely that we will see even more companies talking about the technology on their earnings calls in the future.

MIT researchers create a tool that can detect real photos from fakes

🤖Context of the News - The use of AI to create and manipulate images has become more widespread, and the risk of misuse has also increased. Recent advances in AI have made it possible to create hyper-realistic images that are difficult to distinguish from real photographs.

👨‍💻News - In an effort to address this challenge, researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed a new tool called PhotoGuard.

🦹‍♀️What exactly is PhotoGuard?

  • It is a new mathematical model that can protect images from being manipulated by AI models. It does this by adding very small changes to the pixels in the image. These changes are so small that they are invisible to the human eye, but they can be detected by computer models.

  • Now, when an AI model tries to manipulate an image that has been protected by PhotoGuard, the changes that PhotoGuard made to the pixels will interfere with the AI model's ability to manipulate the image. This will make it difficult for the the AI model to create a realistic-looking manipulated image.

The researchers tested PhotoGuard on a variety of AI models and found that it was effective at preventing manipulation in all cases. They also discovered that PhotoGuard did not significantly degrade the quality of the original photos.

Global market for AI chipset to cross $700B by 2031, report shows

🧑🏻‍💼News - The global market for AI chipset is projected to reach a value of $717.4 billion by 2031, according to a new report by Transparency Market Research Inc. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 31.8% from 2022 to 2031.

The growth of the AI chipset market is being driven by the increasing adoption of AI in consumer electronics products. AI chips are used in a variety of consumer electronics products, including high-end mobile devices, tablets, intelligent speakers, and wearables.

💂🏻‍♀️What are the key findings of the report?

  • The report reveals that companies are developing general-purpose chips that can be used in a variety of devices, including robots, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and freezers.

  • As per the study, North America is expected to be the leading market for AI chipsets in the future. The United States is expected to have significant growth potential in the coming years due to the increasing use of electronic design automation (EDA) technologies to develop cutting-edge AI hardware.

👩🏼‍💻What else is happening?

🧏🏼‍♀️Interesting facts about AI

  • In 2020, IBM's supercomputer "Summit" identified 77 chemicals that could prevent the coronavirus from spreading, thereby aiding doctors in reducing infections and creating better treatment plans.

  • AI can diagnose medical conditions with the same accuracy as top medical experts. One such example is Google's AI algorithm "LYNA" that can detect metastatic breast cancer with a 99% accuracy rate.

  • To help stray cats survive the winter, Chinese search engine company Baidu designed a smart cat shelter in Beijing that utilizes AI to detect when a cat is approaching and automatically opens its door.

🌞 Mythbuster

Myth - AI only consists of robots and androids

Fact - While robots often come to mind when thinking of AI, robotics and AI are separate scientific fields with distinct purposes. Although robots do rely on AI for automation, artificial intelligence extends beyond robotics to various technologies, such as facial recognition in smartphones, smart homes, and healthcare equipment.
