Microsoft unveils Copilot+ PCs featuring built-in AI hardware

👩🏻‍💻News - Microsoft is significantly advancing AI integration in laptops with its new "Copilot+ PCs" branding. This label will indicate Windows laptops equipped with AI hardware and operating system support for AI features.

Major laptop manufacturers, including Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer, and Asus, will offer these models. Additionally, Microsoft will release two AI-enhanced laptops under its Surface line.

🕵🏻‍♀️Key details -

  • The AI features in these laptops are made possible by a built-in neural processor. One key feature it'll power is "Recall," which will use AI to create a searchable "photographic memory" of everything done and seen on the PC.

  • These laptops will run over 40 AI models within Windows 11 to enable these capabilities. Microsoft's AI assistant, Copilot, will also now support OpenAI's new GPT-4o model.

  • According to Yusuf Mehdi, the head of Windows at Microsoft, the upcoming laptops are projected to be "58% faster" than a MacBook Air with an M3 processor and boast all-day battery life. To ensure the performance Microsoft promises, Copilot+ PCs will need to meet certain specifications, including a minimum of a 256GB SSD, an integrated neural processor, and 16GB of RAM—double the starting configuration of a MacBook Air.

  • Microsoft anticipates selling 50 million laptops within the next year under the Copilot+ PC branding. Copilot+ PCs, featuring Qualcomm processors, will be the first to launch on 18 June. Models with Intel and AMD processors will follow at a later date.

AI overviews in Search will increase website traffic and engagement long-term, says Google CEO

🤓Context of the news - AI Overviews for Search was a major highlight at the recent Google I/O event. Google announced that starting 14 May, users will see AI-generated overviews at the top of their Google search results. This change has caused concern among companies and businesses dependent on Google's traffic.

🗣️News - Despite these worries, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai remains optimistic. In a recent interview, he explained that AI Overviews in search will eventually support the growth of high-quality content.

His reasoning? read below 👇🏻

  • When asked about the possibility of Google traffic plummeting for many sites, especially independent ones producing niche content, Pichai clarified that while some sites may experience temporary declines, it doesn't necessarily reflect a broader pattern. Using the analogy of a restaurant experiencing a lull in customers, he emphasized that it doesn't imply people have stopped eating.

  • When asked whether AI previews might decrease the incentive for publishers to share source information online, Pichai said he felt the opposite was true. He argued that AI previews, by providing valuable context, actually enhance user engagement and stimulate growth over time.

  • When questioned about the influx of AI-generated content flooding the web and potentially manipulating search rankings, Pichai reassured that Google's core mission has always been to differentiate between high and low-quality content. He mentioned that Google's teams have been diligently refining ranking systems to better identify high-quality content, suggesting that the entity capable of doing so effectively will ultimately succeed.

UK's autonomous vehicle law passed, first driverless cars expected by 2026

🚘News - The UK's highly-touted regulations for self-driving cars have been formally approved, with the Automated Vehicles (AV) Act receiving royal assent, making them official laws.

According to the government, fully autonomous vehicles might hit UK roads within the next two years.

🧐What about safety and liability though?

The UK aims to lead the way in the autonomous vehicle revolution but acknowledges that accidents are inevitable, as seen in the US.  Hence, liability is a key aspect of its new regulations. In 2022, the UK clarified that corporations will be held responsible for crashes, absolving human drivers of liability when the vehicle is in control.

Each approved self-driving vehicle will be linked to an "authorized self-driving entity," which is usually the manufacturer but could also be the software developer or insurance company. This entity will be responsible for the vehicle when it is in self-driving mode.

The government also plans to establish a vehicle approval system supported by an independent incident investigation function. Companies approved to operate under the new regulations will be required to meet ongoing obligations to ensure that their vehicles are safe.

🤠Prompt engineering tips

  • Incorporate Diversity: Include diverse examples and perspectives in your prompts to encourage the model to generate varied responses.

  • Fine-tune Prompt Structure: Experiment with different prompt structures, such as declarative statements, interrogative sentences, or imperative commands, to see which elicits the best response.

  • Prompt Fusion: Combine multiple prompts into a single cohesive input to provide the model with a richer set of instructions.
