All this and more - Let's dive in!
👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
The New $2B Kid on the block: Mistral Large
What is Mistral AI?
I’m so glad you asked. Mistral AI is focused on delivering the best open source models to the community. They recently launched Mixtral 8×7B, which is shown to outperform both Llama 2 70B and GPT 3.5, at a lower cost. You can also see their first model, Mistral 7B, which outperforms Llama 2 13B on all metrics, and Llama 1 34B on many metrics.
Does size matter? (I’m having too much fun with this affair analogy)
As Apple, Nvidia, and other large computing providers are looking to include more and more integrated memory in their computing devices, a smaller model means that many more personal computing devices can actually support this.
This demonstrates that the future of AI might be personal and local, rather than an oligopoly of tech giants owning the future AI.
Mistral, a Paris based startup, is the newest entrant into the chat wars
They launched the beta for their chat assistant “Le Chat” (this isn’t a joke, this is real and I love it).
So what about the Microsoft deal?
They didn’t say much about the financial terms of the deal but here’s what we know:
Mistral will be using Azure to accelerate development & deployment of their new models.
They are going to work together on commercial goals and developing purpose-specific models for enterprise customers.
Mistral’s new model, Mistral Large, will be available through Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning.
Mistral Large will also be available through the Mistral AI platform
The Financial Times reports that Microsoft will take a minor stake in Mistral AI
Humans vs. Robots: Figure AI’s $2B Triumph
What is Figure AI?
Figure AI is building human-like robots to do human-like things. The founder, Brett Adcock is really interesting. He previously founded:
What’s Figure up to?
Reportedly they are raising $675 million in funding at a pre-money valuation of ~$2B. Some of the investors include Jeff Bezos’ fund, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
Their last $70 million round of funding was said to be focused on the testing of their warehouse solutions.
I, for one, am excited to get my packages even faster 🙋♂️
So what’s with the human style robots?
Well the idea is really simple - if everything is built for humans now, then why not humanize our robots too?
So what’s Figure AI’s plan?
They fully publicized their master plan here.
Removing the need for humans to do Physical Labor. Jeff Bezos is an investor so it seems that Figure sees a future where Amazon warehouses (and all other warehouses) are powered by human-like robots, rather than humans. And robots don’t need to use the bathroom, so that should fit with Amazon’s work policies.
Consumer Household - removing the need for caregivers for an aging population of >700M. Hopefully this will also deal with laundry and dishes, but a man can only dream.
Long term, they plan to send their robots to space to build new worlds for human life. Looks like Elon has a competitor!
🙆🏻♀️What else is happening?
🥳Technical jargon simplified
Data Preprocessing: It refers to the steps taken to clean, transform, and prepare data for AI algorithms. The process involves removing noise, handling missing values, normalizing data, and ensuring it is in a suitable format for analysis.
Clustering: It is a machine learning technique that allows an algorithm to group data points together based on their similarity. It can be used to solve a variety of problems.
Machine translation: It is the translation of text or speech from one language to another by an algorithm without any human intervention.

🌟Mythbuster
Myth - More data means better AI
Fact - The idea that more data automatically means better AI is a myth. While more data can help improve the performance of AI models, it is not the only factor that matters. The quality of the data is also important, as is the way in which the data is used to train the model.
