Google to make AI editing tools free for all Photos users

📸News - Google has announced that several advanced editing features, previously exclusive to Pixel devices and paid subscribers, like the AI-driven Magic Editor, will now be available to all Google Photos users for free.

These editing tools were previously a key feature of Google's premium Pixel devices and a perk of its cloud storage subscription service, Google One. However, in response to the influx of AI editing tools in the market, Google has opted to offer its suite of AI photo editing features to a wider audience at no cost.

This expansion also includes Google's Magic Eraser for removing unwanted objects from photos, Photo Unblur for sharpening blurry images using machine learning, Portrait Light for adjusting the lighting direction in photos after they've been taken, among other features.

🙄What's the catch? Well, there are a few limitations to this expansion. Firstly, the tools will begin rolling out on May 15, and it will take some time for them to reach all Google Photos users.

Moreover, there are specific hardware requirements to use these features. For instance, on ChromeOS, the device must be a Chromebook Plus with ChromeOS version 118+ or have a minimum of 3GB RAM. On mobile devices, the device must run Android 8.0 or higher or iOS 15 or higher. Pixel tablets will now also be supported.

With this expansion, Magic Editor will be available on all Pixel devices, while iOS and Android users (whose devices meet the requirements) will receive 10 Magic Editor saves per month. Beyond that limit, they will need to purchase a Premium Google One plan, which includes 2TB of storage or more.

The other tools will be accessible to all Google Photos users without requiring a Google One subscription. The complete set of features includes Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Sky suggestions, Color pop, HDR effect for photos and videos, Portrait Blur, Portrait Light (including the additional light/balance light features in the tool), Cinematic Photos, Styles in the Collage Editor, and Video Effects.

However, certain features such as the AI-powered Best Take, which merges similar photos to create a single best shot, will remain exclusive to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.

Meta unveils its latest custom AI chip, MTIA

👾News - Meta has revealed the latest version of its custom AI chip, dubbed the "next-gen" Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA), an upgrade to last year's MTIA v1.

MTIA is specifically tailored to optimize Meta's ranking and recommendation models, streamlining both training and inference processes.

According to a blog post by the company, MTIA is a significant part of Meta's long-term strategy to develop AI-focused infrastructure for its services. Meta aims to make its chip design compatible with its existing technology infrastructure and future GPU advancements.

😺What's more? Currently, MTIA is being used to train algorithms, including those for ranking and recommending display ads on Meta's platforms, such as Facebook. However, Meta aims to expand its capabilities in the future to include training generative AI models like its Llama language models.

Furthermore, Meta stated that the focus of the new MTIA chip is to achieve optimal balance in compute power, memory bandwidth, and memory capacity. This updated chip boasts 256MB of on-chip memory at 1.3GHz, a significant improvement from the v1's 128MB at 800GHz. Early tests conducted by Meta indicate that the new chip delivers three times better performance compared to the first-generation version across four evaluated models.

Nvidia and Georgia Tech announce first AI supercomputer for students

👨🏻‍🎓News - On Wednesday, Nvidia and the Georgia Institute of Technology unveiled the first AI supercomputer intended specifically for student use.

The initiative aims to make supercomputing resources, usually reserved for large tech companies and privileged startups, more accessible, highlighting the necessity of preparing the future workforce in AI.

Notably, this announcement follows OpenAI's recent partnership with Arizona State University, wherein the company granted full access to ChatGPT Enterprise for educational purposes such as coursework, tutoring, and research at the university.

🖥️What will the supercomputer be used for? Initially, only undergraduate students at Georgia Tech will have access to the computing cluster, powered by Nvidia's enterprise AI software and a "virtual gateway" created by Penguin Solutions.

So far, the supercomputer has primarily been used by students in the foundations of machine learning class this semester. However, Georgia Tech plans to expand access, aiming for all undergraduate and graduate students to have access by spring 2025, as stated by Arijit Raychowdhury, chair of Georgia Tech’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The supercomputer operates on 20 Nvidia HGX H100 systems, containing 160 of Nvidia’s H100 GPUs, highly sought after in the tech industry. According to Georgia Tech, one of these GPUs could perform a multiplication function in a single second, equivalent to 22 years' worth of work for 50,000 students.

Down the line, the plan is for students to use the supercomputer for various projects, including computer vision, large language models, robotics, supply chain management, chemical or biomedical engineering, generative AI-related creativity and design, and their own entrepreneurial ventures. Raychowdhury emphasized that the underlying aim is to create a computational sandbox for students to conduct their work in collaboration with Nvidia and Penguin Solutions.
