Saudi Arabia-UK AI seminar focuses on ethics and regulations
♨️News - Earlier this week, the British Embassy and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) jointly held the Saudi Arabia-UK AI roundtable in Riyadh. The event focused on essential AI ethics and regulatory matters, including privacy, public trust, and transparency.
The event also saw KAUST presenting several of its research projects and outlining potential areas for collaboration in AI with institutions in the UK.
👥Who attended this event? The event saw participation from a diverse group of attendees, including Yaser Al-Onaizan, the deputy CEO and deputy general-supervisor of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence, UK Ambassador to the Kingdom Neil Crompton, alongside senior officials, academics, and private sector representatives from both countries.
🤔Has Saudi Arabia made any significant moves in AI yet? In September this year, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority introduced the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Personal Data Protection Law, which is set to be enforced starting September, 2024.
Notably, a Saudi Arabia delegation will also be joining the global AI safety summit in Britain next month, that will focus on the existential threat posed by AI.
Meta launches new platform to help humans and AI work together seamlessly
🤖News - Meta's Facebook AI Research (FAIR) team has launched Habitat 3.0, a simulation platform that replicates home-like environments, such as a virtual layout of a kitchen. It supports both robots and human avatars that can be controlled via a keyboard and mouse through VR headsets, enabling collaboration between humans and robots in realistic home environments.
This aligns with Meta's vision of creating 'embodied AI,' where technology actively participates in the physical world through AI agents that can understand, cooperate with, and assist humans in various tasks.
🤓What's the most interesting point here? Habitat 3.0 allows extensive training in human-robot collaboration on a large scale. This involves everyday tasks, from cleaning a living room to cooking in the kitchen.
To test these collaborative AI capabilities, the team designed two tasks. The first involved social navigation, in which the robot had to locate and follow an avatar. The second, social rearrangement - where a robot had to work alongside an avatar to tidy a room. The researchers observed that overtime, the robots efficiently learned to collaborate with avatars, including giving them space while navigating.
AI godfather Yoshua Bengio urges Canadian government to speed up AI regulation
☕News - AI expert Yoshua Bengio told policymakers on October 24 that he had hoped they would have made more progress in regulating AI technology by now. He expected the proposed law to already be in effect this year, but was disappointed with the slow progress of the legislation.
🗣️What's more? Bengio urged the government to act swiftly in regulating AI due to the technology's rapid evolution since ChatGPT's launch, which started the AI race between tech giants and startups.
He added that we are heading in a direction where AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful, and it's likely that they may eventually match human capabilities in various fields.
🧐What is the current state of AI regulation in Canada? As of now, AI regulation in Canada is in the process of being defined through the Digital Charter Implementation Act 2022. This bill, which includes the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, would place safeguards around the use of AI. The bill passed initial readings in the House of Commons but is still undergoing committee review.
