👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Meta bans political advertisers from using GenAI tools over misinformation concerns

♨️News - Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has prohibited political advertisers from using their new generative AI advertising tools. This, after lawmakers expressed concerns that these tools could be used to spread election-related misinformation.

This decision is significant as it is the first major AI policy update by a big tech company to address safety concerns surrounding GenAI ad products.

🤔Are political advertisers the only ones banned? No. In its latest updates on its help center, Meta mentioned that advertisers from other regulated sectors, including housing, employment, credit, social issues, health, pharmaceuticals, and financial services, are also prohibited from using GenAI ad tools. This is aimed at preventing AI from being used to create ads related to sensitive topics within those industries.

😃What's more? Meta has previously stated that it blocked its user-facing Meta AI virtual assistant from generating realistic images of public figures. The company also pledged to watermark AI-generated content and imposed a ban on misleading AI-generated videos across all content, including organic (unpaid) posts.

Notably, other companies like TikTok, Snapchat, and Google, are also taking steps to restrict political ads.

EU social forum to explore policies to shield workers from AI-driven changes

☕News - This year's European Employment & Social Rights Forum (EESRF) will focus on the impact of AI on the workforce. The forum, taking place on 16 and 17 November, will be hosted by the European Commission in Brussels and online.

The forum aims to help employers, employees, and policymakers prepare for AI-driven changes in the workforce. This, by enabling workers to make the most of AI, setting clear rules to maintain job quality and promoting AI policies that reduce poverty and inequality.

🧐Why is this important though? Several studies and economists have suggested that while AI could significantly boost the global economy, it might also eliminate many jobs, making income inequality worse and affecting workers' well-being. Hence, it is crucial to implement policies that ensure job security.

To this end, the forum will serve as a platform to discuss ideas and policy choices that make sure AI technology benefits workers through appropriate legislation.

Moreover, as the forum takes place while the EU is actively pursuing leadership in AI regulations, it offers a valuable opportunity for the forum's insights and recommendations to shape AI policies.

China issues guidelines for the development, mass production of humanoid robots by 2025

🤓Context of news - Last week, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said that humanoid robots that can perform tasks like humans are set to be the next major disruptive technology after computers, smartphones, and electric vehicles.

📜News - China's MIIT has issued guidelines, aimed at mass producing humanoid robots by 2025. The ministry has defined key goals in its document titled "Guiding Opinions for Innovating and Developing Humanoid Robots."

🤨What are these goals?

  • The primary goal is to establish development centers to produce elements or parts needed for mass-producing androids by 2025.

  • The next goal is to secure a reliable supply chain for industrial humanoid robots by 2027.

  • It also aims to improve upon traditional robots through research in various areas, including operating in tough conditions and developing odor-detecting sensors.

  • Finally, it aims to simplify the challenge of creating humanoid robots by breaking it down into three components: the brain, the cerebellum, and the limbs.

😶‍🌫️Are there any concerns though? While several industries offer promising opportunities for the use of humanoid robots, ethical considerations such as privacy, safety, and AI bias need to be addressed.
