👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

EU commission will share supercomputers with AI start-ups to boost innovation

♨️News - On 16 November, the European Commission and the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) announced that they will be expanding access to the EU's world-class supercomputing resources for European artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups, SMEs, and the broader AI community as part of the EU AI Start-Up Initiative. This move is aimed at advancing the EU's goal of establishing a trustworthy and responsible global AI ecosystem.

🧐Why was it needed? It was important for the development and scalability, as supercomputers can significantly speed up the training and testing of AI models. Their powerful computing capabilities allow them to handle complicated calculations and large datasets very quickly, cutting down the training duration from months or years to mere weeks.

😀What's more? To engage and encourage participation from start-ups experienced in large-scale AI models, the Large AI Grand Challenge with a €1 million prize has been launched. The competition invites European start-ups to share their developed models freely for non-commercial use or publish their research findings.

The EuroHPC JU is also working on stepping up activities and services with High-Performance Computing to support trustworthy AI in Europe. The goal is to push for the smart use of HPC technology in scientific and industrial innovation.

Meta updates it's AI image generation model Emu with new capabilities

🤩News - On 16 November, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed two new AI features built on Emu, the company's foundation model for image generation.

What are these new AI features and & how are they different?

  • The first feature, named "Emu Edit," will allow users to modify images accurately based on text inputs. What's different is that it can help users remove or replace elements without manual selection. What this means is, users can simply enter a prompt that says "turn the cat into a dog," and Emu Edit will be able to identify the cat and make the change on its own.

  • Moreover, it only edits what's necessary according to the prompt. This simply means that if you ask it to add text to a door, it won't change anything else about the door's design.

  • The second tool, "Emu Video," generates four-second animated clips from text prompts, reference images, or a mix of both. While the results may not look highly realistic, they show improvement from basic animations.

According to a blog post by Meta, both these features will soon be integrated on Facebook and Instagram.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai calls for U.S.-China collaboration on AI regulation, development

☕News - Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference on 16 November, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that he sees China playing a leading role in the field of AI, noting the remarkable scale of AI work in the country.

He emphasized the need for the U.S. to collaborate with China on both regulatory measures and innovative developments.

🧐Why is collaboration with China important though? Based on his experience at Google, Pichai added that collaboration is key to achieving long-term progress, particularly in technology such as AI.

Furthermore, he compared the importance of global collaboration for AI safety to working together on addressing climate change. He further pointed out that if something goes wrong with AI in one country, it affects everyone on the internet.

Pichai stressed that countries together share the responsibility to create global frameworks, highlighting that the recent agreement between U.S. President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in this regard is a positive sign.

On a side note, executives from major multinationals like Microsoft Corp., Citigroup Inc., Tesla Inc., and others are meeting this week with President Xi Jinping, other Asian leaders, and President Joe Biden. This gathering could mark the beginning of enhanced international collaboration in the field of AI.
