♨️News - Meta is planning to introduce AI-powered user profiles across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. 

Over the past year, the company has been rolling out various AI tools, like chatbots in Messenger and character creation features, which, according to Connor Hayes, Meta’s Vice President of Product for Generative AI, have already led to “hundreds of thousands of characters.” While most of these profiles are private for now, Meta expects them to become a regular part of its platforms in the near future.

🤔What's their plan? Meta sees these AI profiles becoming just like regular accounts, complete with bios, profile pictures, and the ability to create and share AI-generated content. Hayes mentioned that they’re investing heavily in AI over the next couple of years to make their platforms more engaging.

👨🏻‍💻What's more? Meta is also working on a text-to-video tool for content creators. This feature will let users create videos featuring AI characters that reflect their interests, like cooking, fashion, or beauty tips. According to a company spokesperson, these AI characters are designed to both entertain and offer useful advice.

😵‍💫Why is this problematic? Critics aren’t thrilled about the idea of AI-generated content and profiles flooding social media. Some fear it could lead to political manipulation or an overload of low-quality posts. Concerns over harm are also rising, highlighted by a recent lawsuit involving an AI chatbot. 

Becky Owen, Meta’s former head of creator innovations, cautioned that AI-driven accounts lack emotional depth, risking dilution of platform quality and trust.
