⚡Meta’s Open-Source Match

PLUS: OpenAI’s Sora Leaked in Protest

Reading time: 5 minutes

Key Points

  • Ai2 has launched OLMo 2, a fully open-source AI model family.

  • OLMo 2 models rival Meta’s Llama 3.1 in performance, excelling at tasks like summarizing, coding, and answering questions.

☕News -  Ai2, the nonprofit founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, has unveiled OLMo 2, the latest addition to its Open Language Model series. Released on Tuesday, this model family stands out for being entirely reproducible from scratch—a rare achievement in AI.

Unlike many so-called “open” models, OLMo 2 meets the Open Source Initiative’s strict definition of open source. This means the tools and data used to build it are freely accessible, offering transparency that rivals models like Meta’s Llama.

👨🏻‍💻What about performance? The OLMo 2 family includes two models: OLMo 7B, with 7 billion parameters, and OLMo 13B, boasting 13 billion parameters. These parameters, which measure a model’s complexity, directly impact performance, with higher numbers generally yielding better results. Both models excel at tasks like answering questions, summarizing text, and generating code.

Ai2 trained the models on a massive dataset of 5 trillion tokens, equivalent to roughly 3.75 trillion words. This training material included carefully curated websites, academic papers, discussion boards, and both synthetic and human-generated math workbooks. According to Ai2, this meticulous approach has produced models that hold their own against leading open-source counterparts, such as Meta’s Llama 3.1.

Key Points

  • A group of artists leaked Sora’s early access through Hugging Face.

  • The group claims OpenAI is misleading about Sora’s capabilities and pressuring testers to spin a positive narrative.

♨️News - A group of artists has leaked access to Sora, OpenAI’s video generator, in protest of what they call duplicity and “art washing” by the company.

On Tuesday, the group published a project on the AI dev platform Hugging Face, seemingly linked to OpenAI’s Sora API, which has yet to be made publicly available. By using early access authentication tokens, the group created a frontend allowing users to generate 10-second videos at up to 1080p resolution, simply by entering text descriptions.

Despite long queues for access, several users managed to upload samples, many bearing OpenAI’s distinctive watermark. However, after just a few hours, OpenAI temporarily shut down early access for all artists.

🤔What prompted the move? The artists allege that OpenAI is pressuring early testers, including red teamers and creative partners, to promote Sora in an overly positive light while failing to fairly compensate them for their contributions.

They further claim that OpenAI is being misleading about the tool's capabilities, as all outputs created with Sora must be approved by the company before they can be widely shared. Only a select few creators are permitted to have their works showcased, which the group argues demonstrates a lack of transparency and fair treatment within the program.
