👨‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom

Elon Musk launches a new AI firm to challenge OpenAI

👨‍💻News - Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence startup called xAI. The company's website says the goal of xAI is to "understand the true nature of the universe."

Musk's new company is separate from X Corp but will work closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies.

In a Twitter Space event on Wednesday evening, Musk discussed his plans for building a safer AI. He said that xAI will not be explicitly programmed with morality, but will instead be designed to be "maximally curious."

🤵 What did Musk say exactly? Musk explained his belief that a "maximally curious" AI would be the safest type of AI. He argued that if an AI is curious about the true nature of the universe, it will be more likely to focus on learning and understanding, rather than on developing its own goals or desires.

He also predicted that superintelligence, or AI that is smarter than humans, will arrive in five or six years.

👩‍🎓What’s more? Musk's new AI startup has assembled a team of engineers with experience at leading companies such as OpenAI and Google. Director of the Center for AI Safety Dan Hendrycks will advise the xAI team and the company would be a direct competitor to OpenAI.

China finalizes rules for generative AI models like ChatGPT

🙀News - Chinese regulators have finalized first-of-its-kind rules governing generative artificial intelligence, as the country seeks to tighten oversight of the rapidly developing technology.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) collaborated with other regulators to develop the regulations which will take effect on 15 August.

CAC said that the new rules are designed to encourage innovative applications of generative AI while also ensuring that it is used responsibly.

😵But what are these rules in essence?

  • Any company or individual that wants to offer generative AI services in China will need to obtain a license.

  • If a generative AI service provider finds content that is illegal or harmful, they must take steps to stop generating that content, improve their algorithm, and report the material to the relevant authorities.

  • Gen AI service providers must conduct security assessments to ensure that their products are secure and that user information is protected.

  • Lastly, the services must be aligned with the country's core socialist values.

Meta to release commercial open-source AI model to compete with rivals

🎃News - Meta is gearing up to release a commercial version of its AI model, which will allow start-ups and businesses to create customized software based on the technology.

This move might position Meta as a major player in the generative AI space, alongside Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google, which are currently leading the pack.

😎What’s special about it though? Meta says its LLMs are “open-source”, by which it means details of the new model will be released publicly. This contrasts with the approach of its competitors, such as OpenAI, which has kept the data and code used to build its latest model, GPT-4, a secret. Well, the open-source aspect hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by the company.

Meta has a long history of contributing to open-source projects. By releasing an open-source commercial AI model, Meta can demonstrate its commitment to open source and its belief that open source is a valuable way to develop and share technology.

🤖Technical jargon simplified

  • Label - In AI, a label is a piece of information that is attached to data to identify it. In the simplest terms, a label is a name. For example, an image of a cat might be labeled as "cat." Labels are used in AI to train machine learning models.

  • Parameter - A parameter is a setting that can be adjusted to change the behavior of a machine-learning model. For example, a parameter might control how many features are used to train the model, or how complex the model's decision-making process is.

  • GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is a type of AI model that can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer your questions in an informative way. GPT learns to identify patterns in the data and then uses those patterns to generate new text.
