U.S. Department of Homeland Security unveils AI roadmap to promote global safety standards
♨️News - The US Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has revealed its first roadmap for AI.
This effort aligns with President Biden's recent Executive AI Order, which instructed the DHS to promote AI safety standards worldwide, protect U.S. networks and critical infrastructure, and address the potential weaponization of AI.
🧐Do we have any details yet? The roadmap outlines five key efforts to guide specific initiatives and clarify CISA's responsible approach to AI in cybersecurity. These are:
Employing AI responsibly to aid CISA’s mission
Checking and evaluating the reliability of AI systems
Protecting critical infrastructure from potential misuse of AI
Collaborating and communicating on essential AI initiatives
Growing expertise in AI within the workforce
🤓What's more? In separate yet related efforts, Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) introduced an AI bill that directs federal agencies to set standards for transparency and accountability of AI tools.
The proposal aims to clarify terms related to generative AI, specifying what qualifies as "high-impact." It also assigns the Commerce Department the responsibility of submitting a five-year plan for testing and certifying critical-impact AI.
Microsoft announces new Copilot AI offerings to assist users with their needs
👨💻News - On 15 November, Microsoft announced four new offerings for Copilot, its brand of generative AI technologies. These new AI offerings include; Copilot for Azure, Copilot for Service, Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides, and Copilot Studio.
✨How can these new AI products help?
Copilot for Azure works as an AI chat assistant for cloud customers. It suggests how to set up apps and systems and helps with troubleshooting by finding and providing solutions to potential issues.
Copilot for Service is created for customer service situations. It works with customer relationship management (CRM) software like Microsoft's Dynamics 365, Salesforce, SAP, Workday, and ServiceNow. It answers sales-related questions and provides suggestions for the next steps.
Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides uses generative AI to simplify and summarize information for frontline workers and displays the summaries on the equipment they're using.
Lastly, Copilot Studio is a platform that provides tools to link Copilot for Microsoft 365 (the Copilot found in apps such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft's Edge browser, and Windows) with external data sources.
In another interesting update, the company revealed its own custom-designed AI chips, aimed at saving costs in delivering artificial intelligence services by developing essential technologies in-house.
4 million South Koreans could see job losses due to AI's impact
👷♂️News - According to a new study by the Bank of Korea, AI could potentially replace up to 4 million jobs, or 14% of South Korea's workforce, within the next two decades.
The central bank study adds to the numerous warnings about the significant impact of AI on labor markets worldwide. It also affirms the growing belief that while AI brings about a productivity surge, it also poses a threat to white-collar jobs worldwide.
🕵️♂️What are the key findings?
The study found that workers with higher incomes and stronger academic backgrounds face more significant threats, as AI could easily handle their analytic and cognitive tasks.
Specific professions such as chemists, doctors, lawyers, accountants, and asset managers were found to face higher threats, whereas individuals in religious fields, food services, teaching, and singing are less likely to be replaced by AI.
It also noted that AI is expected to increase the demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, as well as for softer interpersonal skills like communication and teamwork.
Even in the past, reports from big firms like Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Co have supported these predictions. However, on a positive note, AI is also expected to boost the global economy by a significant 7% over the next ten years.
