Biden Administration announces 200-member consortium dedicated to AI safety
🕴🏻News - The Biden administration announced the establishment of the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) on 8 February.
This initiative aims to bring together AI developers, academics, government and industry experts, and civil society groups to ensure the safe and trustworthy development of artificial intelligence technology.
🥸Key details -
The consortium will operate under the U.S. AI Safety Institute (USAISI) and will assist in fulfilling the priority actions specified in President Biden's Executive Order; such as developing guidelines for red-teaming, capability evaluations, risk management, safety and security, and watermarking synthetic content.

Google rebrands Bard AI as Gemini, launches new app and paid subscription
🤓News - On 8 February, Google announced a major rebranding of its AI chatbot and assistant, Bard. Now known as Gemini, the platform offers a fresh app and subscription options, positioning itself as a key rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Android users can download a new dedicated Android app for Gemini, while iPhone users can access Gemini through the Google app on iOS.
😺What's more? Google also introduced a new subscription option for users interested in accessing Gemini Ultra 1.0, Google’s most advanced AI model. This access is available for $19.99 monthly via Google One, the company's paid storage service, with a two-month free trial included.
For existing Google One subscribers, the $19.99 fee includes their existing storage plans, so Google frames it as just a $10 monthly increase for those users. Additionally, those who opt for the AI subscription will gain access to Gemini's assistant features across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet.
These new rollouts are available to users in over 150 countries and territories but are currently limited to English. Google plans to add more language options in the near future, starting with Japanese and Korean, followed by other languages.
Russian President Vladimir Putin discusses progress, risks and future of AI
🎙️News - In an interview on 9 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed matters concerning war and peace in Ukraine, as well as the risks associated with advancements in genetics and artificial intelligence, and concerns about the prospect of a world war.
🫣What are his thoughts on AI?
Putin commented that the pace of change in the world exceeds that seen during the collapse of the Roman Empire, highlighting advancements in genetic research and artificial intelligence as indicators of this rapid transformation.
He suggested that geneticists have the capability to create a "superman" and jokingly remarked about Elon Musk implanting a chip into a human brain.
He argued that the limitless and unchecked advancement of artificial intelligence, genetics, or other modern trends cannot be halted, comparing it to the historical inability to conceal gunpowder from humanity.
However, he emphasized the necessity for humanity to think about its response to the advancements in genetics and artificial intelligence, cautioning that these developments could soon pose a threat to humanity at large.
To this end, he mentioned that there would soon come a time for interstate negotiations on how to regulate these advancements, adding that the nuclear arms control treaties of the Cold War could serve as a guide in this regard.
