OpenAI rolls out GPT-4.5, its most knowledgeable model yet

♨️News - OpenAI is launching GPT-4.5 today, its newest and largest AI language model.

👨‍💻Here's the Lowdown - OpenAI is calling it its “most knowledgeable model yet,” promising better writing capabilities, improved world knowledge, and what it describes as a “refined personality over previous models.”

According to OpenAI, interacting with GPT-4.5 will feel more “natural” than before, thanks to enhanced pattern recognition and connection-drawing abilities. The company says this makes it especially useful for writing, programming, and solving practical problems.

That said, OpenAI is clear that GPT-4.5 is not a frontier model. A leaked internal document described it as OpenAI’s largest model yet, with over 10 times the computational efficiency of GPT-4. However, it doesn’t introduce enough new reasoning capabilities to be considered a true frontier model. The document also noted that GPT-4.5 performs below models like o1 and o3-mini in certain evaluations, though OpenAI later removed that mention from an updated version.

Despite its limitations, OpenAI says GPT-4.5 hallucinates far less than GPT-4o and even slightly less than the o1 model. “We aligned GPT-4.5 to be a better collaborator, making conversations feel warmer, more intuitive, and emotionally nuanced,” OpenAI researcher Raphael Gontijo Lopes said during the company’s livestream. Internal testing reportedly showed GPT-4.5 outperforming GPT-4o across nearly every category.

In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the model’s strengths but set expectations accordingly, calling GPT-4.5 a “giant, expensive model” that “won’t crush benchmarks.”

🤓First Impressions - For those who got early access, GPT-4.5 is an interesting release, one that improves on past models without redefining what’s possible.

Wharton professor and AI commentator Ethan Mollick described it as a “very odd and interesting model.” While he praised its writing ability, he noted that it can be “oddly lazy on complex projects.”

OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI lead Andrej Karpathy compared GPT-4.5 to his first experience with GPT-4, saying, “everything is a little bit better, and it’s awesome, but also not exactly in ways that are trivial to point to.” At the same time, he cautioned that it doesn’t significantly push forward reasoning-based capabilities like math and coding.

🤖Rollout - GPT-4.5 is available today for Pro users, with OpenAI planning to roll it out to Plus and Team users next week. Enterprise and Edu users will follow after that. The model is also available now through Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry platform.
