Apple uses AI to improve basic functions in its new iPhone 15 and Watches
🥳News - Apple launched its new iPhone 15 and Series 9 Watch with improved functions, thanks to the use of Artificial Intelligence technology.
The company is taking a different approach to AI than other tech giants. Instead of trying to transform its products with AI, Apple is focusing on using it to improve the basic functions of its products.
🫣What’s special about the watch?
The new Apple Watch has a specialized AI chip that can process machine learning tasks up to twice as quickly as the previous model. Thus, making Siri, Apple's voice assistant, 25% more accurate.
In fact, the new chip in the Apple Watch lets you double-tap your fingers together to control the watch without touching the screen. You can use this gesture to answer or end calls, pause music, or see the weather.
🤔 What’s new in iPhone 15? It has the new version of Portrait mode that would automatically recognize when a person is in the frame and would gather the data needed to blur the background later. Since its automatic, users will not have to remember to turn the blur feature on.
The AI-powered features of the iPhone 15 have received mixed reviews from users. Some have praised the new features, while others have said that they are not significantly different from the previous versions of the iPhone.
Microsoft president, Nvidia chief scientist discuss AI regulation with Senate panel
📻News - Microsoft President Brad Smith and Nvidia Chief Scientist William Dally testified, on Tuesday, in a Senate judiciary hearing on artificial intelligence. The hearing was the latest in a series of congressional hearings on how to regulate AI.
In their opening testimony, Smith and Dally praised the Senate's work on a legal framework for "high-risk" AI, but they also cautioned that AI is a powerful tool that can be used for good or for bad.
🤓What’s more? Nvidia's Dally said some fears, particularly doomsday concerns around AI systems becoming sentient machines, are unfounded. As per him, “Uncontrollable artificial general intelligence is science fiction and not reality.”
On a separate note, Senator Klobuchar asked Smith on how AI systems use content related to journalism. Smith responded saying, he believes local journalists and publications should have the right to decide whether their content can be used for training AI systems. As per him, the media outlets should be able to negotiate collectively on this issue.
Schumer's AI summit faces criticism from senators, Democrats call it 'wrong'
👩💼News - Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's high-profile, bipartisan forum on regulating AI is facing criticism from senators, with some calling it "wrong" and "secretive."
The all-day summit will be held behind closed doors, and senators will not be able to ask questions of participants in person. Instead, they will have to submit questions in writing.
🤶Who all shared the voice of skepticism? Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., a vice chair of the Democratic conference, said, “These tech billionaires want to lobby Congress behind closed doors with no questions asked. That’s just plain wrong.” Senate Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., echoed Warren's concerns, saying the forum's format is "not efficient." And Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said it was "ridiculous" that the summit is closed to the media.
However, Schumer aides said that the forum will be moderated by Schumer and Rounds, with Heinrich and Young also participating. They said that the gathering is closed to the public to prevent lawmakers from making speeches for the cameras and to ensure that they feel comfortable asking questions about a topic they may not be familiar with.
The summit is scheduled to take place on Wednesday. Besides tech executives, participants will include ethicists, academics, national security experts, and labor and civil rights leaders.
