NSA of U.S. to establish AI security center for national defense
🏛️News - The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has announced that it plans to establish an artificial intelligence security center that will be tasked with supervising the incorporation of AI capabilities into the country's defense and intelligence services.
The creation of the AI security center comes in response to an NSA study, which highlighted the need to protect AI models from theft and sabotage - a significant national security concern. This is especially important as generative AI technologies have the potential for both beneficial and harmful uses.
👨💻How will the security center function? The security center will be a part of the NSA's Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, working closely with various partners including private industry, national labs, academia, the Department of Defense, and international allies to strengthen the U.S. defense-industrial base against threats primarily from China and Russia.
However, its main focus will be to use foreign intelligence insights to create guidelines and methods for AI security and ensure the safe development and use of AI in national security and defense.
It is important to note that while NSA plans to utilize AI, its use will be limited to serving as an aid with the ultimate decisions lying in the hands of humans, as emphasized by NSA Director, Army Gen. Paul Nakasone.
Google introduces new tool for website publishers to opt-out of AI data training
🕷️Context of news - Web crawlers are automated programs that navigate the internet, either to collect data from websites or to index web pages for search engines. Several companies have previously voiced concerns about struggling to protect their data from Google's crawlers as completely blocking Google's crawlers would result in their websites being excluded from the search engine.
😇News - Now, in a fresh turn of event, Google has introduced a new tool that enables website publishers to opt out of contributing their data to train the Google’s AI models while remaining visible in the Google Search.
The new tool, called Google-Extended, enables websites publishers to control how their data is used by Google. They can choose to allow Google to crawl and index their websites, but prevent Google from using their data to train AI models.
🧐How to use the tool though? The tool will be available via robots.txt, which is a text file that tells web crawlers which website they are allowed or disallowed to access. Google also noted that as AI applications expand, they will explore more machine-readable methods for web publishers to exercise choice and control, with further updates to come soon.
🤗What's more? Google also announced that it will be opening up its generative AI search for teenagers aged 13-17. The feature will allow young users to ask questions in a conversational manner to help them dig deeper while preventing inappropriate content from appearing, ensuring a safe experience.
EU lawmakers urged to put a complete ban on dangerous models in upcoming AI Act
🪧News - Amnesty International, as part of an alliance of 155 civil society organizations led by the European Digital Rights Network (EDRi), has urged the European Union (EU) to include a ban on dangerous AI-powered technologies in the forthcoming AI Act. This plea comes as the EU works towards finalizing the world's first comprehensive AI rulebook this fall.
⚠️What are these dangerous AI-powered technologies? These AI technologies encompass unregulated AI systems that various nations globally have implemented for purposes like evaluating welfare claims, monitoring public areas, or predicting an individual's potential for criminal behavior. While these technologies are marketed as solutions to underlying societal issues such as poverty, gender bias, and discrimination, they often worsen racism, inequalities, and human rights violations.
In the past, Amnesty International has documented and exposed how several of these AI systems have led to wrongful penalization, wrongful arrest and in some cases even wrongful indictment.
Therefore, it is due to these findings that Amnesty has advocated for a complete ban on dangerous AI technologies within the EU. It has also called upon lawmakers to ensure that these technologies are not produced within the EU only to be exported to countries where they are employed for serious human rights violations.
