Alarmed by the potential risks, Senate to hold hearing on AI safety later this year

👩🏽‍💻News - U.S. senators, alarmed by the potential for artificial intelligence to be used for malicious purposes, will convene a series of hearings later this year to discuss possible laws.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that there is "real bipartisan interest in AI" and that the Senate will hold "the first-ever AI Insight Forums" to hear from experts on the issue.

🧛🏽‍♂️What more information did Schumer reveal? Schumer said senators were briefed on AI on Wednesday by experts at the U.S. Energy Department, the National Science Foundation, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

On Thursday, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee took a vote to send a bill to the full Senate. The bill proposes to appoint a chief AI officer in every federal agency.

Additionally, the bill aims to create a council for these AI officers, allowing them to work together and plan how the federal government should use AI.

Bard chatbot can't be a replacement of search engine, says Google

👨🏽‍🎓News - Google is informing users that its new chatbot, Bard, should not be used as a replacement for traditional search engines.

"Bard is not really the place that you go to search for specific information," said Debbie Weinstein, Google's UK chief. "It's more of an experiment that's best suited for collaboration around problem solving and creating new ideas."

Bard's homepage states that it has limitations and may not always be accurate. However, it does not repeat the advice from Google's UK boss, to check all results using an orthodox search engine.

🦹🏽‍♀️So what’s the verdict? Despite these warnings, some people have expressed concern that chatbots like Bard could "kill" traditional search. However, Google says that it believes that both chatbots and traditional search engines will have their own roles to play in the future.

🤴🏽And what Google thinks about AI’s impact on jobs? Google is of the opinion that many people are interested in the economic opportunities that AI offers, but they don't know how to take advantage of them.

Google recently released a report stating search interest in AI reached an all-time high in the UK in the first half of 2023. The most searched "how to" question was "how to make money with AI". The question "how can AI help a business?" was also asked frequently.

Australia's medical association calls for stronger AI regulations in healthcare

🐸News - The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has called for stronger rules and transparency around the use of artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry.

The AMA has also stated that Australia lags behind comparable countries in regulating AI. This is because Australia does not have any specific legislation governing the use of AI in healthcare.

👨🏼‍💻What did AMA suggest then?

  • AI protections should include requiring clinicians to make the final decisions about patient care, and obtaining informed consent from patients before using AI for any treatment or diagnostic.

  • The AMA emphasized the need to protect patient data and ensure that AI systems are used ethically to prevent greater health disparities.

  • The association has also recommended that the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act be considered for Australia. This act would categorize the risks of different AI technologies and establish an oversight board.
