Germany proposes to increase scrutiny of Chinese AI investments

👨🏼‍🎓News - Germany is proposing to tighten scrutiny of Chinese investments in artificial intelligence as part of a broader effort to protect its economy and security from the risks posed by Beijing.

There are concerns that China could use its AI capabilities to gain a strategic advantage over other countries, or to interfere in their internal affairs.

🧙🏼How is Germany planning to strengthen its oversight though?

  • Robert Habeck, Germany's deputy chancellor and economy minister, has put forward some measures. It would give the government more power to block or delay Chinese investments in AI companies and projects. These measures would also require Chinese investors to disclose more information about their businesses and intentions when making an investment in Germany.

  • The proposed legislation is being circulated across government departments for consultation and feedback.

  • The proposals come amid growing concerns in Europe about China's high ambitions in the field of AI. Plus, not to forget, China is a major cyber power, and has also been accused of hacking into the computer systems of other countries, in the past.

The German government's proposals are likely to be welcomed by some businesses and politicians, who argue that the measures are necessary to protect Germany's interests.

US science adviser calls for more safety against AI risks

🤶🏼News - Arati Prabhakar, President Biden's science adviser, has called for the development of strong safeguards to manage the risks of artificial intelligence.

In her recent discussions with President Biden, Prabhakar has found him to be laser-focused on taking action to mitigate the risks associated with AI.

💁🏼‍♀️What more did she mention? In a latest interview, Prabhakar explained that we cannot have perfect measures of safety and effectiveness for AI, but we can develop processes and procedures to help us understand these systems better.

Prabhakar also argues that it is important to protect our personal information because AI systems can be used to harm an individual or even national security in a number of ways.

🕵🏼‍♀️What’s the conclusion? Prabhakar expressed hope that many more US companies would join the seven companies that have already agreed to meet the voluntary AI safety standards set by the White House in July.

She emphasized that this is just one part of the solution, and that both the executive and legislative branches of government also need to take steps to ensure the safe and responsible development of AI.

Workers in Singapore are the world’s fastest in adopting AI skills, report says

👩🏼‍🚀News - Workers in Singapore are adopting artificial intelligence skills at a much faster rate than workers in other countries. A new report from LinkedIn found that the share of LinkedIn members in Singapore who added AI skills to their profiles grew 20 times from January 2016, compared to the global average of eight times.

👨🏼‍🎨 What were the key highlights of the report?

  • The five fastest-growing AI-related skills added to LinkedIn profiles in Singapore were all related to generative AI. These skills include question-answering, classification, and recommender systems.

  • Only 3% of software engineers' skills will still be required to be performed by humans in the future. This means that AI is likely to automate many software engineering jobs, but it will also create new jobs in AI engineering and data science.

  • As per the findings of the report, Singapore is well-placed to seize the opportunity presented by the increasing demand for AI skills. The government has been a strong advocate for AI development, and the country has a deep pool of talent.

🌟Mythbuster

Myth - AI can replace the need for data scientists

Fact - AI is a powerful tool, but it cannot replace data scientists. Data scientists are essential for the entire AI lifecycle, from problem-solving and data preparation to model selection and interpretation. They bring expertise, creativity, and human touch to the table, which are irreplaceable for optimal AI development and utilization.
