G7 antitrust authorities are looking to remove barriers that make it tough for new AI companies to compete with the bigger players who have better resources.
By promoting open technical standards and clear guiding principles, the G7 hopes to encourage innovation while ensuring fairness and accountability in AI markets.
☕News - Antitrust authorities from G7 nations have said they might take strong measures to maintain competition in the AI sector, hoping to tackle any risks before they become too deep-rooted.
Following a recent two-day summit in Rome, the authorities noted that they want to reduce the "competitive bottlenecks" that make it difficult for new AI companies to compete with established firms, which typically have first access to the best AI tools, data, and chips.
The group, which includes officials from the U.S., U.K., Japan, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy, wants to make sure AI companies don't use their market power to team up in ways that could lead to sharing sensitive information, controlling prices, or creating a monopoly. They're also focused on making sure AI isn't misused to affect copyright, consumer rights, privacy, or data protection.
🧐How do they plan to achieve this? The watchdogs pointed out that keeping up with AI developments, setting up AI laws, and improving international cooperation are key to getting better results in AI markets.
The group also mentioned that having open technical standards would help drive innovation, reduce the concentration of market power, and stop consumers and businesses from getting stuck in closed systems.
To kick things off, they have put together some “guiding principles” to ensure these markets remain open and fair, emphasizing fair competition, access, choice, interoperability, innovation, transparency, and accountability.
Key Points
Meta's Movie Gen is an AI-powered video generator that creates high-definition videos with sound from text inputs.
The model can also edit existing footage, allowing users to customize styles and add elements not present before.
Despite its capabilities, Meta's chief product officer stated the product won't be released soon due to high costs and generation time.
🎬News - Meta has announced a new AI-powered video generator that produces high-definition videos with sound.
The model called Movie Gen automatically creates new videos and edits existing footage or images based on text inputs. It adds AI-generated audio that complements the visuals with ambient sounds, sound effects, and background music, and it can produce videos in different aspect ratios.
In addition to generating new clips, Movie Gen can customize videos from images or change elements in existing videos. For example, a still image of a dog can be transformed into a video of the dog playing in a park, chasing a ball, and having fun with other dogs.
👨🏻💻What's more? Movie Gen can also edit existing footage, letting users change the style, transitions, or add elements that weren’t there before. For example, a simple video of a cartoon character jogging could be altered in various ways: in one scene, the character could be holding a beach ball, in another, the background could change to a snowy landscape, and in a third, the character could be wearing a superhero cape. All of these changes can be made using text prompts.
Unfortunately, though, Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, shared on Threads that the company “[isn’t] ready to release this as a product anytime soon” since it’s still too expensive and takes too long to generate videos.
